Description
Rabi~en~Rose, whose real name is Hikaru Usada, is a recurring character in the Di Gi Charat franchise and appears as a supporting figure in the original video animation Leave it to Piyoko!. She is a fourteen-year-old student who works part-time at the Gamers store in Akihabara while chasing her dream of becoming an idol, and she refers to herself as the idol of Gamers. Her stage name is a playful adaptation of the French phrase la vie en rose, meaning a life seen through rose-colored glasses, with the first word altered to suggest the English word rabbit. Her surname Usada also contains a pun, since usa is a shortening of usagi, the Japanese word for rabbit.
Rabi~en~Rose lives on her own because her parents left her by herself in order to help her become an idol. Because of this arrangement, she is financially poor and takes on several jobs to support herself while saving money for her ambitions. In the original anime series, she is introduced as an ordinary girl who uses a pair of dice to transform into her bunnygirl stage outfit, which consists of a pink, white, and red dress, large rabbit ears, and a round cotton tail. In Leave it to Piyoko!, she appears in her familiar role as a worker and regular presence at the Gamers store alongside the other main characters, and she retains her distinctive look of pink twintails, dark red eyes, a light pink waitress-style costume decorated with ribbons, purple high-heeled shoes, oversized bunny ears, and two large dice ornaments attached to her hair.
Her personality is competitive and self-assertive, and she often carries herself with a haughty or high-pressure attitude, especially toward her rival Dejiko. She is constantly looking for ways to start a contest or one-up Dejiko, and she dislikes being addressed by her real name, preferring her stage name. Beneath this prickly exterior, however, she is frank and warm-hearted. Several stories in the franchise, particularly in manga installments, suggest that her rivalry is partly a cover for a genuine desire to be friends with Dejiko, and this softer side is usually revealed through comedic gestures or moments that deflate her pride.
Her main motivation is to become a genuine idol and to prove herself as the top performer at Gamers, which puts her in direct competition with Dejiko, who shares the same dream. This rivalry defines her role in the story: she functions as Dejiko's foil and occasional antagonist, but the two ultimately share a bond built on mutual recognition and similar goals. In Leave it to Piyoko!, her part is more limited, as the story focuses primarily on Pyocola Analogue III and the Black Gema Gema Gang, but Rabi~en~Rose still participates in the comedic interactions of the established cast and carries her ongoing dynamic with Dejiko into the spin-off setting.
Her character development centers on the gap between her proud public image and her vulnerable private circumstances. Living alone with limited money while working toward an uncertain career gives her a sympathetic foundation, and her repeated clashes with Dejiko gradually reveal that her competitive behavior hides loneliness and a wish for connection. This makes her more than a simple rival, since her growth involves learning to let down her guard and accept friendship even as she pursues her ambitions.
In terms of abilities, Rabi~en~Rose can transform with her dice and is known for several combat and mobility techniques. She can fly by spinning her large bunny ears like a propeller, a move often called the Bunny Copter, and she also uses attacks such as an ear-based punch, a projectile known as the Rabi~en~Launcher, and a flying knee kick. Unlike some other animal-eared characters in the franchise, she does not end her sentences with a rabbit-themed verbal tic, which further sets her apart as an independent and somewhat more grounded personality within the group.
