Description
General Dangel, also known as General Dungele, is a significant antagonist introduced in the second half of the anime. He is a high-ranking military officer from the Campbell Star, dispatched from Campbell Castle to assume command of the Earth invasion effort. His arrival marks a shift in the enemy’s tactics, as he takes over from the previous commander, Prince Garuda.
In stark contrast to his older brother, the more calculating and strategic Warukimedes, Dangel is a burly and aggressive force of nature. He is a stereotypical "muscle general," relying on overwhelming power and brute force rather than complex schemes or intellectual cunning. This direct, headstrong nature defines his personality, as he openly disdains what he perceives as weakness or trickery. While not particularly intelligent, he possesses a notable sense of fairness and martial pride. In one instance, he destroyed a fake weapon made by his brother, refusing to accept a victory achieved through such underhanded means.
As a field commander, Dangel’s primary motivation is a straightforward one: to crush his enemies through sheer power. He craves direct, decisive combat and has little patience for the failures of his predecessors. This desire leads him to personally pilot the giant magma beasts created by his brother, a task he undertakes with relentless enthusiasm. Unlike his brother, Dangel is a hands-on warrior who lives for the thrill of battle.
Dangel’s key relationships are defined by conflict. He is constantly at odds with his brother, Warukimedes, whose scheming and cautious approach he views as cowardly. He also serves under the tyrannical Empress Janera, a ruler who has no tolerance for failure. As Dangel suffers a series of defeats against the super robot Combattler V, Janera’s patience wears thin. In a cruel act of motivation, she reveals that a powerful bomb has been installed inside his helmet. He is given one final chance to secure victory; if he fails, the bomb will detonate and kill him.
Despite his brutal nature, Dangel undergoes a grim form of character development as his situation becomes desperate. His initial bluster gives way to a tragic resolve. Forced to risk his life with every sortie, his final attack is a desperate, last-ditch effort. After his magma beast is destroyed, he ejects and challenges the protagonist, Hyoma, to a one-on-one sword duel. While he attempts to cheat by giving Hyoma a broken weapon, his final moments reveal a warrior's spirit. Defeated and on the verge of death, his helmet bomb explodes, but his final scream is a refusal to give up: "I can still fight! Let me fight!". In his death, he is portrayed not just as a villain, but as a pitiful soldier manipulated and discarded by his own leader, with a fate that would have been a robotic enslavement had he survived.
In terms of abilities, Dangel is a physical powerhouse. He engages in intense strength training to enhance his already formidable physique. He is shown to be durable and powerful enough to withstand and even repel the Combattler V's signature "Super Electromagnetic Spin" attack using magma water, a feat few other pilots could accomplish. In personal combat, he is a capable swordsman, and a notable physical trait is that one of his hands is a mechanical claw, which he uses as a weapon in his final duel.
