Description
Aoi Hyoma is the leader of the Battle Team and the primary pilot of the super electromagnetic robot Combattler V, specifically controlling the Battle Jet that forms the robot's head. His background is marked by tragedy, as he lost his parents in a car accident when he was very young. Subsequently, he was raised in an orphanage called the Sun Academy, an experience that left him with a deep personal complex about being a child without parents. Before joining the fight against the Campbellian invaders, Hyoma lived as a rebellious motorcycle enthusiast and speed freak, often engaging in high-speed chases with the police and treating it as a daily routine.

Hyoma possesses a passionate, hot-blooded, and impulsive personality. He is a young man of strong will and a bright disposition, which helps him lead his team through many difficult situations. Despite his impulsive nature, he demonstrates responsibility, selflessness, and a deep sense of moral integrity. A key aspect of his character is his protective instinct, particularly towards children and other orphans, which is a direct result of his own upbringing; any threat to them is a powerful trigger for his righteous anger. His determination is nearly unbreakable, and he is known for pushing past physical and emotional pain to continue fighting. While he is a capable leader, he can be surprisingly dense when it comes to romance, often failing to notice the affections of the women around him, which leads to slow progress in his love life.

His primary motivation throughout the series is to defend the Earth from the invading Campbellian forces, first led by the Great General Garuda and later by Empress Janera. As the team leader, he carries the weight of coordinating the Battle Team and piloting the core component of their ultimate weapon, Combattler V. His role is not just tactical but also emotional, as he strives to keep the team united and focused on their mission to protect humanity's future. He is driven by a strong sense of justice and a desire to ensure no one else suffers the kind of loss he experienced as a child.

Hyoma's key relationships significantly shape his character. His dynamic with fellow team member Juzo Naniwa is one of initial friction due to their opposing personalities, but this eventually evolves into a deep bond of mutual understanding and camaraderie. His most important relationship is with Chizuru Nanbara, the granddaughter of Combattler V's creator. Their shared background as orphans creates a foundation of empathy, and their camaraderie gradually develops into a romantic connection, with the two becoming an official couple by the end of the series. He also shares a notable rivalry with the Campbellian commander, Garuda. What begins as a hostile conflict transforms into a mutual respect, with Garuda recognizing Hyoma as a worthy opponent.

A pivotal moment in Hyoma's development occurs when Garuda destroys both of his arms in battle. He receives cybernetic prosthetic arms, but these replacements initially cause him great pain due to rejection reactions and can malfunction at critical moments. Demonstrating his characteristic determination, he secretly undergoes rigorous rehabilitation to master his new limbs, refusing to let his teammates see his struggle or to be pitied. This event showcases his resilience and cements his reputation as a true determinator. Over the course of the series, he matures from a reckless biker into a responsible leader who prioritizes the safety of his team and civilians, all while maintaining his core fiery spirit. In terms of abilities, beyond his piloting skills, Hyoma is a formidable hand-to-hand combatant, especially in the series' second half where he displays incredible agility and swordsmanship. His fighting style and signature weapon, the super-electronic yo-yo, were inspired by a yo-yo champion seen on television.
