Description
Daisaku Nishikawa is a member of the Battle Team, identifiable by his brown combat uniform. He serves as the pilot of the Battle Tank, the machine that forms the torso of the super robot when combined. A key characteristic of his vehicle is that it lacks independent flight capability, often requiring transport or assistance from the other team machines to remain airborne.
Hailing from the Kumamoto prefecture on the island of Kyushu, Daisaku is a master of judo, a skill for which he was recruited to the team. His physical strength from this background is considerable, yet his personality is gentle, kind, and laid-back. This combination often gives him the archetype of a gentle giant. One of his defining traits is his dream to become a manga artist, and he is frequently seen sketching, an aspiration he mentions upon introducing himself.
Despite his calm demeanor, Daisaku possesses a strong will and deep emotional capacity. When a beloved mentor figure was kidnapped, he was so consumed by guilt over failing to save him that he attempted suicide, only being stopped at the last second by a teammate. His determination is also shown in his devotion to his family. When his relatives in his hometown were abducted by the alien Campbell forces, he single-handedly infiltrated the enemy's forced labor camp. Disguised as a Campbell soldier, he used a secret password known only to his siblings to locate and rescue them.
Within the team, Daisaku has a particularly strong bond with the youngest member, Kosuke Kita, often interacting with him during missions and battles in a supportive, almost mentorship role. He was assembled alongside his teammates Hyoma Aoi, Juzo Naniwa, Chizuru Nanbara, and Kosuke Kita by Dr. Nanbara to defend Earth from the invading Campbellians. In the course of the story, Daisaku's abilities in the Battle Tank prove to be tactically versatile, such as when his machine's digging functions are used to divert a volcanic lava flow threatening the team's base.
While he is generally overshadowed in the narrative by the hot-blooded leader Hyoma, Daisaku remains a steadfast and reliable member of the team. He speaks in the dialect of his home region, adding a distinct cultural flavor to his lines. His loyalty and courage in the face of personal danger, particularly regarding his family, provide some of the most significant moments for his character, showcasing a quiet resolve beneath his unassuming and friendly exterior.
