Description
Kenshiro is the protagonist of the story, a warrior who wanders a post-apocalyptic wasteland following a global nuclear war. He is the rightful sixty-fourth successor of an ancient and deadly assassination art known as Hokuto Shinken, a martial art that allows its master to kill or heal by striking the hidden meridian points, or pressure points, on an opponent's body.
Kenshiro is identifiable by the seven scars on his chest, which form the shape of the Big Dipper constellation, earning him the moniker "the Man with Seven Scars". Originally an orphan from the war-torn Land of Asura, he was sent as a child to be raised by Ryuken, the previous successor of Hokuto Shinken. Kenshiro was the youngest of four adopted sons trained by Ryuken, with his adoptive older brothers being Raoh, Toki, and Jagi.
In terms of personality, Kenshiro is defined by a deep-seated compassion that contrasts sharply with his immense capacity for violence. While he is an unbeatable fighter who shows no mercy to bandits and tyrants who prey on the weak, he is emotionally open, intelligent, and warm towards his friends and innocent survivors. He is a just and honorable man who does not kill for the pleasure of it, and he would rather not resort to violence, but the brutal nature of the world forces him to fight to protect others. Before the events of the story, he was more forgiving, but after being betrayed and left for dead, he acquired a merciless edge when facing evil. His famous catchphrase, spoken just before an opponent dies from his pressure-point strikes, is "You are already dead".
Kenshiro's primary motivation throughout the story is twofold. Initially, he is driven by a quest to reclaim his kidnapped fiancée, Yuria, from a rival martial artist named Shin, who also carved the seven scars into his chest. Following this, his journey evolves into a larger mission to protect the innocent and serve as a savior to the weak in the lawless wasteland. He also faces the duty of confronting his adoptive brothers, particularly the ambitious Raoh, who violates the laws of Hokuto Shinken by using its power for conquest.
His role in the story is that of the wandering savior who rights wrongs and defeats powerful warlords. He is a symbol of order and justice in a chaotic world. Throughout his journey, he is often accompanied by two young orphans, Bat, a thief, and Lin, a girl he rescues early in his travels. They become his loyal companions and witnesses to his battles. His most significant relationships are with his three adoptive brothers. Raoh, known as the Conqueror of the Century's End, is his ultimate nemesis. Toki is a kind-hearted brother who uses Hokuto Shinken for healing, and Jagi is a jealous and dishonorable sibling who instigates the conflict with Shin. His biological older brother, Hyoh, and another brother, Kaioh, appear later in the story as adversaries from his native Land of Asura.
Kenshiro undergoes significant development from the beginning of the story to the end. He starts as a defeated man, left for dead after losing Yuria. He grows into a more skilled and complete warrior, mastering new techniques through his many life-or-death battles. A key moment in his development is the mastery of Muso Tensei, the ultimate secret technique of Hokuto Shinken. This technique, which allows the user to become intangible by entering a state of nothingness, can only be mastered by one who has experienced profound sorrow. After defeating Raoh and being reunited with Yuria for her final years, his journey takes him to the Land of Asura to confront his origins. In the end, he takes Raoh's orphaned son, Ryu, under his wing before continuing his solitary journey as the guardian of the wasteland.
Kenshiro possesses a vast array of notable abilities derived from Hokuto Shinken. His primary skill is the ability to strike an opponent's pressure points, causing a variety of devastating effects from explosive death to paralysis. The art also grants him enhanced physical capabilities, allowing him to punch through solid materials, move at superhuman speeds, and react fast enough to catch bullets. Beyond destruction, he can also use the same pressure point techniques for healing himself and others from physical and psychological ailments. His mastery eventually includes the technique Muso Tensei, which makes him effectively invincible and allows him to channel the fighting spirits of his fallen rivals.
