Description
Youzou Ooba, son of a wealthy congressman, was raised in privilege yet haunted by deep-seated fear of his father, fostering a complex relationship with authority that later fueled rebellion—first through art, then resistance against the governing system.
In 2036, he inhabits a society reliant on the SHELL system, where internal nanomachines prevent illness, injury, and death, yet stark disparities endure. Residing idly in the polluted "Outside" beyond Route 16, his life of drug use and detachment lacks purpose until Masao Horiki draws him into drag-racing gangs and an incursion into the privileged "Inside" zone within Route 7.
A protest organized by his friend Takeichi against SHELL's oppressive conditions—19-hour workdays exchanged for freedom from death—ends catastrophically. Takeichi suffers severe bodily damage, mutating into a monstrous "Lost," a transformation triggered by disconnection from SHELL. Youzou subsequently mutates but uniquely retains the ability to revert to human form, attracting significant attention.
Rescued by Yoshiko Hiiragi of the anti-Lost agency H.I.L.A.M., his extraordinary capacity to influence the Lost leads to recruitment. Tasked with investigating escalating "Human Lost" incidents threatening societal collapse, he grapples with emerging powers, the trauma of transformation, and a civilization torn between restoration and ruin. His journey, marked by intense rage, sorrow, and despair, culminates in a metamorphosis into a "demon"—symbolizing either complete loss of humanity or a potential path toward self-discovery.
