Description
Yoshiko Hiiragi works for the secret government agency H.I.L.A.M. (Human Intelligence Laboratory Mechanist), tasked with combating the threat of mutated humans called "Lost." These mutations arise when individuals voluntarily disconnect from the SHELL system, a network of internal nanomachines that prevents disease, injury, and death, granting a 120-year lifespan to those who can afford it.
She wields a unique power to detect and contain the Human Lost phenomenon, employing specialized "device swords" as weapons. These swords feature vibrating blades that penetrate the hardened skins of Lost mutants and built-in hypodermics to inject poison. Beyond combat, Yoshiko serves as a public relations officer for the SHELL system, reflecting her genuine belief in its potential to create a better future.
During a mission in the polluted slums outside Route 16, she encounters Yozo Oba, a drug-addicted artist who transforms into a Lost after an accident. Yoshiko subdues him but miraculously reverts him to human form instead of eliminating him. This event reveals Yozo shares her anomalous abilities, positioning him as a potential key to resolving the societal crisis stemming from SHELL system inequality.
Her interactions with Yozo and figures like the revolutionary Masao Horiki underscore her commitment to preserving the existing regime. She operates under Shibuta, the head of H.I.L.A.M., who prioritizes maintaining the status quo. Within the organization, field team leader Atsugi acts as a father figure to her.
Yoshiko's character arc involves navigating the moral complexities of a world starkly divided between the affluent elite in the pristine "Inside" (Route 7) and the impoverished masses in the polluted "Outside" (Route 16). Her faith in the SHELL system is tested as she confronts the consequences of its failures and the emergence of Lost mutations.
