Description
Pointblank, called Blanker in the original Japanese version, is an Autobot Targetmaster in the anime Transformers: The Headmasters and serves as the leader of the Autobot Targetmaster unit. He is a veteran soldier of the long war between the Autobots and the Decepticons, and he is introduced as a former superior officer of younger Autobots such as Wheelie, who summons him along with Sureshot and Crosshairs to Earth to help deal with leftover Decepticon weaponry. While the group is disposing of a plasma bomb that was accidentally activated, they encounter a ship of refugees from the planet Master fleeing Decepticon pursuit. When the plasma bomb detonates in the middle of the battle, the small Master refugees are fused to the arms of Pointblank, Sureshot, and Crosshairs, creating a permanent bond. The refugees gain the ability to transform into the weapons of their partners, and in this way Pointblank is paired with the Master Transformer Peacemaker, known as Peaceman in the Japanese version, forming a Targetmaster team.
In terms of personality, Pointblank is a cool-headed and highly disciplined soldier, known for his exceptional precision and unwavering focus in combat. He is also a somber, no-nonsense character whose long years of fighting have left him weary. He believes that words can do more harm than weapons, and as a result he says very little. His long experience has stripped away any sense of glory or adventure he may once have associated with battle, and he carries himself with a quiet, pessimistic outlook, though he does not openly complain. His partner Peacemaker is cheerful and optimistic and repeatedly tries to lift his spirits, with little success, though Pointblank appreciates the effort.
Pointblank's central motivation is to see the war end so that he can finally know peace. He does not fight out of hatred or a desire for glory; he fights because he believes the conflict can only be resolved by defeating the Decepticons. His weary outlook comes from the conviction that an end to the fighting may never arrive, yet he continues to carry out his duty as a soldier, relying on hard experience and practical tactics rather than enthusiasm or idealism.
In the story, Pointblank leads the newly created Autobot Targetmaster squad. He and his team join Fortress Maximus's crew on its mission to the planet Master, where the new unit quickly clashes with the Autobot Headmasters. Pointblank and his fellow Targetmasters are hardened, experienced warriors, and they regard the Headmasters as less seasoned, which creates friction between the two groups. Despite this early tension, the Targetmasters take part in the later major campaigns against the Decepticons, including battles involving the Master Sword, the Zarak Shield, and the final confrontation on Earth.
The most important relationship in the character's arc is with Peacemaker, his Targetmaster partner. Because the two were joined by the explosion, they share a telepathic link, and Peacemaker can attach to Pointblank's arm as a gun. Their contrasting temperaments, with a cheerful partner and a dour soldier, form a defining element of the character. He also works closely with his fellow Targetmasters Sureshot and Crosshairs, with whom he shares the same origin, and he serves under Fortress Maximus alongside the Headmasters despite the initial friction. His counterparts among the enemy are the Decepticon Targetmasters Slugslinger, Misfire, and Triggerhappy, who were created in the same accident.
Over the course of the anime, Pointblank develops from a reluctant and weary veteran into a reliable and respected unit leader. Although he begins by looking down on the Headmasters as less experienced, he and his team ultimately fight alongside them for the Autobot cause, and he settles into his role as commander of the Targetmaster forces.
In terms of abilities, Pointblank transforms into a car, giving him a fast ground vehicle mode. As a Targetmaster, his hand is effectively replaced by his partner, who becomes a living weapon capable of making its own tactical decisions, which is a significant advantage because a second mind is present to track targets and choose when to fire. The telepathic link between the two allows them to act in near-perfect coordination. In combat, he is characterized as an exceptionally precise and disciplined marksman who maintains his focus even in the chaos of battle.
