Description
In the Japanese anime series Transformers: The Headmasters, Crosshairs is an Autobot who arrives on Earth alongside the crew of the Battleship Maximus. He serves as one of the top lieutenants to the Autobot sub-commander Pointblank, a warrior of considerable renown. The character is a Targetmaster, a designation that refers to a specialized type of Transformer.
The origin of Crosshairs's Targetmaster abilities is the result of a unique accident. During a space mission to dispose of powerful Decepticon explosives, Crosshairs and his comrades Pointblank and Sureshot were caught in a tremendous plasma energy explosion while trying to protect a ship of refugees from the planet Master. While the blast rendered them unconscious, they miraculously survived. The incident also caused a permanent fusion, bonding each Autobot to one of the Master refugees. The small Master robot bonded to Crosshairs is known as Pointech, who can transform into a powerful weapon that attaches to Crosshairs's arm. This event solidified his role as a Targetmaster.
Personality-wise, Crosshairs is characterized by a meticulous and cautious nature. His defining trait is a powerful reluctance to waste ammunition, which makes him a precise shot who will not fire his weapon unless he is absolutely certain he cannot miss. This careful disposition is balanced by a noticeable cockiness, particularly after gaining his Targetmaster powers. He and his fellow Targetmasters are depicted as being quite proud and confident in their new abilities, to the point where Crosshairs and Sureshot have to physically intervene when Pointblank's boasting becomes too unbearable for the other Autobots.
In terms of his role in the story, Crosshairs is a supporting but active member of Fortress Maximus's Autobot forces. He participates in major battles, including engagements on the planet Master and in orbit. He and his fellow Targetmasters often operate as a unit, using their combined firepower to confront Decepticons such as the Horrorcons, Apeface and Snapdragon. During a battle on Master, the trio engages the enemy while in vehicle mode and unarmed, demonstrating a level of skill and overconfidence that allows them to defeat their opponents without using their newfound powers. His tactical mind is also valued, as he is known to be one of the members who helps formulate battle plans.
Key relationships for Crosshairs include his immediate commander, Pointblank, and his comrade Sureshot, with whom he frequently works. He also serves under the larger leadership of Fortress. His most crucial relationship is with his Targetmaster partner, Pointech. While their bond is a product of circumstance, it is an effective partnership, with the smaller robot trusting Crosshairs to call the shots in combat.
Crosshairs has defined notable abilities. His alternate mode is an off-road vehicle built for traversing very rough terrain, capable of a maximum speed of 160 miles per hour. In this form, he can mount Pointech's weapon mode for use. In robot mode, his primary weapon is Pointech, who transforms into a dual rocket-propelled grenade launcher that can lock onto a target in less than.0003 seconds. A less-discussed vulnerability is that his partner Pinpointer (the English name for a similar character) can suffer from dizziness due to the fumes from his own grenades, which can affect accuracy. Furthermore, Crosshairs himself can become emotionally distressed by the heavy destruction he witnesses in battle, which sometimes hampers his combat effectiveness. His focus on efficiency is a core component of his combat philosophy.
