Description
Mansaku Taihō is a major rival character in the anime Samurai Giants. He hails from the mountainous region of Hida, where he was raised as a lumberjack in a large family with twelve siblings, parents, and grandparents. His physique is enormous and his strength is monstrous, earning him the nickname “the wonder child of Hida.” He is a left-handed batter and a left-handed thrower. He first appears during the winter off‑season when Banba Ban and Hatsuma Tarobei are training in the mountains and encounter him cutting timber. When Banba pitches a ball to him, Taihō hits it with such force that the ball splits in two, immediately establishing him as a fearsome opponent.

Taihō joins the Chunichi Dragons in the 1972 season, wearing uniform number 88. His motivation in the story is primarily to challenge Banba and prove his hitting power against the protagonist’s increasingly outlandish magic balls. He is not a villain but a straightforward, powerful competitor who respects strength and determination. His personality is simple and unpretentious, often with a calm, almost cheerful expression, but his eyes sharpen intensely when a decisive pitch is coming.

In terms of role, Taihō is the second major rival that Banba faces after Hikaru Mizuki and before others such as Wolf Chief and Fumi Fuji. His presence forces Banba to develop new pitching techniques. When Banba first uses the Hi‑Jump Magic Ball, Taihō counters it with a back‑to‑pitcher stance, turning his back to the pitcher and fouling off pitch after pitch to wear down Banba’s stamina. Later, when Banba introduces the Big Spin Magic Ball, Taihō adapts by spinning his own body in time with the ball’s rotation, a technique called the “rotational hitting style.” These countermeasures push Banba to create the combined Hi‑Jump Big Spin Magic Ball.

Taihō’s key relationship is his rivalry with Banba. Their battles are intense and respectful. Taihō also interacts briefly with other teammates and rivals, but his focus remains on facing Banba. In terms of development, Taihō evolves from a lumberjack with no organised baseball experience into a professional hitter capable of adjusting to supernatural pitching. His ability to read and react to magic balls is a testament to his extraordinary physical gifts and adaptive instincts.

Notable abilities include his raw power, which allows him to hit balls extremely hard, and his two signature batting stances: the back‑to‑pitcher stance for fouling off high‑difficulty pitches, and the rotational stance for meeting spinning pitches with equivalent spin. He also possesses remarkable endurance and a calm demeanour under pressure. Through his clashes with Banba, Taihō demonstrates that brute strength combined with quick adaptation can challenge even the most inventive pitching.
