Mohammad Alai Jr. is a fictional character from the Baki series, the son of the renowned boxer Mohammad Alai Sr., a figure loosely inspired by the real Muhammad Ali. An American of African descent, he stands 188 cm tall at approximately 25 years old, possessing a muscular yet athletic build and black hair. A significant childhood encounter saw his father introduce him to Yuujiro Hanma. During this meeting, the young Alai Jr. displayed natural boxing talent by landing jabs and punches on Yuujiro, who retaliated by flicking him hard enough to slam him into a wall—an event foreshadowing his later struggles against the Hanma family. Alai Sr. expressed his hope that his son would develop a boxing style effective against diverse martial arts, including wrestling and grappling. Alai Jr. claims to have perfected a specialized martial art focused exclusively on punches, though he occasionally incorporates kicks, such as the ground-strike technique "Earth Logic" to augment his punching power. His fighting style emphasizes extraordinary speed, reflexes, and rapid, dance-like footwork, enabling him to close distances swiftly. His punches carry exceptional knockout power, capable of felling most opponents with a single clean hit. Key techniques include the evasion maneuver "Sway Back" and precise jabs. Five years before his main arc, Alai Jr. left his father in a catatonic state under unrevealed circumstances. He later joined the "Great Chinese Challenge" tournament on a Japanese/American team, defeating opponents like Kaiou Han with minimal effort. Post-tournament, he encountered Baki Hanma's girlfriend, Kozue Matsumoto, comforting her during Baki's hospitalization. He developed romantic feelings for her, but she remained uninterested, viewing him more maternally. Seeking to challenge Baki, Alai Jr. systematically fought Baki's allies. He initially defeated Gouki Shibukawa and Doppo Orochi, victories achieved because neither opponent treated the bouts as life-or-death conflicts. His overconfidence led him to confront Jack Hanma, who fought mercilessly and inflicted Alai Jr.'s first brutal defeat. While injured, he accepted rematches against Shibukawa and Orochi, who now fought seriously; both broke his limbs and crushed his spirit. Despite these losses, Alai Jr. challenged Baki at the Kourakuen Underground Arena, believing his boxing superior. Baki overwhelmed him, avoiding all punches while delivering a concussion-inducing hook, a kick to the groin, and repeated stomps to his face. Baki nearly killed him by attempting to break his neck, only halted by Alai Sr.'s intervention. Post-defeat, Alai Jr. suffered a psychological collapse, crying uncontrollably and losing his confidence and fighting spirit. He accepted Kozue's rejection and his loss to Baki, subsequently disappearing from the series. A critical weakness defined his fighting mentality: unlike other series combatants, he lacked preparedness to face death or truly lethal force. This flaw rendered him vulnerable against ruthless opponents like Jack Hanma or fighters abandoning restraint. His personality combined kindness and determination with combat arrogance, though his defeats exposed his emotional fragility.
