Description
Kamekichi is a character who appears in the anime Coji-Coji, and he is identified as a turtle spirit. However, his visual design gives the impression more of a boy wearing a turtle's shell rather than a traditional anthropomorphic turtle.
In terms of background, Kamekichi serves under a larger, more authoritative turtle spirit known as Kame Daimeijin. Kamekichi is constantly ordered around by this figure and feels that he has no choice but to obey, no matter how unreasonable the request may be, as he believes Kame Daimeijin's word is absolute. Despite his subordinate role, he maintains a calm and gentle personality. He is generally easygoing and good-natured, though he does possess a sharp tongue on occasion and can make caustic remarks.
One of the defining aspects of Kamekichi's personality is his even-tempered nature. However, this placid exterior conceals a surprisingly muscular and hairy body beneath his shell, which contrasts sharply with his otherwise mild demeanor. When angered, particularly in defense of something or someone he cares about, he is capable of immense rage.
Kamekichi's primary motivation and greatest joy in life is drinking the tea that his best friend, Yakan-kun (the Kettle Boy), boils. He treasures this tea so deeply that he considers it his reason for living. He is so dedicated that he never misses the moment the kettle boils, rushing over with his teacup to have it poured immediately. This love for tea is central to his role in the story. In one significant episode, Kame Daimeijin inexplicably forbids Kamekichi from drinking Yakan-kun's boiled tea. This prohibition robs Kamekichi of his happiness, causing him to lose his energy and spirit. It is only through the intervention of the main character, Coji-Coji, who subtly threatens Kame Daimeijin, that the ban is lifted and Kamekichi can once again enjoy his beloved beverage.
Regarding his key relationships, his friendship with Yakan-kun is the most prominent. Kamekichi is a loyal and supportive friend, and he is aware that Yakan-kun has romantic feelings for another character named Pero-chan, which he supports. His relationship with Kame Daimeijin is one of servitude and a lack of power, though he follows it without question.
Notably, Kamekichi has an unusual physical trait: his shell is not a permanent part of his body but rather something that can be removed like a piece of clothing. He was unaware of this for a long time. On one occasion, a fraudulent fortune teller selected him as a sacrifice for a ritual that involved roasting a turtle spirit over a fire to read the cracks in its shell for divination. During this event, it was discovered his shell is detachable, and due to a shop clerk's mistake, he ended up purchasing and wearing a completely transparent shell.
Kamekichi possesses one notable special ability. When his anger reaches its peak, he can unleash a powerful attack known as the Turtle Memories. This technique converts his own memories, accumulated over tens of thousands of years, into energy that he can discharge from his mouth in a beam-like attack. The attack is immensely powerful; it was implied that a successful blast would have been fatal to his targets. On the one occasion he attempted to use it against the troublemaking duo Buhibuhi and Suji, he was unable to release all the stored energy, and the attack failed to launch.
