Description
Okamura Bae is a character from the late-1990s children's comedy work Yoshimoto Muchikko Monogatari, a multimedia franchise built around insect characters modeled on real-life comedians associated with the Yoshimoto Kogyo talent agency. He is based on Okamura Takashi of the comedy duo Ninety-nine, and his design combines that comedian with a common fly. The name itself is a playful pun that fuses Okamura's name with the Japanese word for fly, softened to "bae" rather than the standard "hae."

In terms of personality, Okamura Bae is a mischievous and unruly insect who takes great pleasure in filth and practical jokes, with a particular fondness for messy and unsanitary subjects. He serves as the foolish, joke-driven half of his comedy pairing, a role known in Japanese comedy as the boke, while his frequent companion Amenbo Yabe, a water strider based on Ninety-nine's Yabe Hiroshi, acts as the straight man who is repeatedly flustered and exasperated by his antics. One of his most defining physical traits is a constantly runny nose, which becomes a running gag in both the anime and the manga; he is shown using his nasal mucus in absurd ways, such as performing yo-yo tricks with it.

His role in the story differs somewhat between the two main versions of the franchise. In the anime, which centers on the ladybug character Tentoumushi Hanako as its protagonist, Okamura Bae is a prominent companion rather than the lead. Alongside Amenbo Yabe, he joins the journey undertaken to search for Hanako's missing mother, and his unruly behavior provides much of the comic energy during the group's travels. In the manga adaptation, which was serialized in Monthly CoroCoro Comic and Comic GOTTA and presented as short, high-energy gag segments, he takes on the central role and serves as the protagonist, with the humor built largely around his own antics.

His main motivation in the anime is tied directly to the quest to help Hanako locate her mother, a mission he undertakes together with Amenbo Yabe. His key relationships are therefore with Yabe, his long-suffering comedy partner whose calm demeanor contrasts sharply with his own, and with Hanako, whose journey he supports. The dynamic between Okamura Bae and Amenbo Yabe mirrors the partnership of the two real-life comedians on whom they are based, with one supplying foolishness and the other supplying reactions.

His notable abilities are comedic rather than heroic. He has a strong talent for mischief and practical jokes, a fearless attitude toward dirty or unpleasant situations, and a memorable knack for turning his own runny nose into a tool for slapstick stunts. Across the course of the franchise, his function remains consistent as an energetic troublemaker who drives humor through impulsive behavior, whether as the lead of the manga or as part of the traveling group in the anime.
