Description
Nanako Shimada works as a systems engineer and web‑site designer for the ORE Journal, a mobile news publication. She is twenty‑three years old and possesses a deep affinity for computers, often feeling more comfortable interacting with machines than with people. This tendency manifests in her naming her desktop computer Amarilis, her laptop White Milky, and keeping a pet iguana named Marilyn in the office’s break room. Her fashion sense and daily habits are noticeably eccentric: she counts down the seconds before the end of her shift and then leaves the office with remarkable speed.

Despite her quirky demeanor, Nanako is a highly skilled programmer and hacker. Her technical expertise proves invaluable on multiple occasions. When the Rider Shibaura Jun attempts to take over the ORE Journal’s system and use its distribution network for a deadly game, Nanako quickly builds a defense program from a nearby café, transmits it to the office computers, and successfully reclaims the system. Earlier, she traced threatening emails to identify the location of a battle game that had spilled into the real world, helping her colleagues pinpoint where the next incident would occur.

Her role in the story is that of a capable support character who aids the main cast with computer‑based investigations. She develops a mild crush on fellow ORE Journal employee Shinji Kido, though her feelings remain largely unspoken. Her initial relationship with new colleague Megumi Asano is strained because of their contrasting attitudes toward computers and naming conventions, but the two eventually become friendly after Nanako inadvertently photographs a Mirror Monster while taking pictures of her iguana. That photograph, later confirmed as genuine by an expert, provides crucial evidence of the Mirror World’s existence and deepens her involvement in the mysteries surrounding the Rider War.

Nanako’s background is otherwise ordinary: she is a dedicated employee who takes pride in her work. At one point she is kidnapped by a man who holds a grudge against ORE Journal, but the kidnapper is attacked and eliminated by a Mirror Monster, and Nanako is hospitalized as a precaution. While recovering, she overhears hospital staff discussing the terminal illness of lawyer Shuichi Kitaoka, a fact that later informs her interactions with him.

Her development is subtle but steady. She grows from a socially withdrawn technician into a more involved member of the ORE Journal team, collaborating with Megumi and contributing directly to the investigation of the Rider War. Her technical abilities remain her defining trait, allowing her to make meaningful contributions even though she never becomes a Rider herself.
