Description
Daisuke Okubo serves as the chief editor and president of ORE Journal, a mobile news communication company he founded after leaving a position at a large newspaper. He is 36 years old and shares a close bond with his employee Shinji Kido, as the two were friends and former college classmates prior to Shinji joining the organization, with Daisuke acting as a senior figure or sempai to him.
Daisuke possesses a caring and approachable personality, viewing his staff not simply as workers but as part of an extended family or a close group of friends. He consistently prioritizes the well-being of his employees, such as when he expressed concern for reporter Reiko Momoi’s safety over getting a story. Despite his supportive nature, he can be impulsive and prone to jumping to conclusions, as evidenced when Shinji was arrested. He displays a deep trust in Shinji’s unique drive and sincerity, even when Shinji’s distraction with the Rider War begins to affect his work, choosing to cut his salary rather than dismiss him outright.
While Daisuke generally remains at the office as the chief editor, he becomes more directly involved in investigative journalism as the series progresses. He assists Shinji in covering the jailbreak of the dangerous criminal Takeshi Asakura and helps relay information to the police. After reporter Nanako Shimada posts a photograph of a Mirror Monster, ORE Journal suffers a significant loss of subscribers, leading to financial difficulties that force Daisuke to temporarily close the office and operate out of a cafe. Eventually, he manages to pay off the debts and resumes normal operations, dedicating much of his time to investigating Shiro Kanzaki and the mysteries of the Mirror World.
Daisuke’s role evolves from a supportive boss to a crucial investigator who ultimately learns the truth about Shinji’s secret identity as Kamen Rider Ryuki. Together with Reiko Momoi, he completes a comprehensive investigation into the Mirror World. His most significant contribution comes when he provides Shinji with the philosophical guidance needed to find resolve in the Rider War. Recognizing that other Kamen Riders fight for clear, tangible wishes, Daisuke challenges Shinji to define what he himself is fighting for, a question that helps Shinji solidify his purpose. Following this, Daisuke publishes the article that exposes the existence of the Mirror World and the Rider Battle to the public, adding his own personal reflections on a conflict he describes as containing no justice, only pure desire. Daisuke possesses no combat abilities or powers, as his role is strictly that of a civilian investigator and mentor.
In a later appearance, years after the events of the original series, the rise of social media has caused ORE Journal to go out of business, leaving Daisuke despondent and unable to move on from the loss. He spends his time in sadness until a reunion with Shinji, who encourages him to look forward again, allowing Daisuke to rekindle their friendship and happily accept his role as editor-in-chief once more.
