Description
Shinji Kido is the true identity of Kamen Rider Ryuki. He works as a journalist trainee at the ORE Journal, where his earnest and somewhat clumsy nature often leads him into trouble. His entry into the conflict is accidental; while investigating a missing person case, he discovers a mysterious card deck in the apartment of a vanished man. This deck soon draws him into the Mirror World, a dangerous parallel dimension where monsters prey on humans. After a series of encounters, Shinji forms a contract with a powerful dragon-like creature named Dragreder, formally becoming Kamen Rider Ryuki.
In personality, Shinji is defined by a naive but unwavering idealism. He is hot-blooded, outgoing, and possesses a simple, straightforward way of thinking. This makes him appear slow or gullible to others, and he is frequently manipulated by more cynical characters. Despite this, he is fundamentally kind-hearted and possesses a strong sense of justice. He feels genuine sadness at the suffering of others, even for villainous Riders, and is extremely reluctant to take a human life, believing that doing so would destroy him as well. While he hesitates to fight other Riders, he gives his all when battling Mirror Monsters, showing courage and a surprising talent for out-of-the-box thinking.
Shinji’s primary motivation is purely selfless. Unlike almost every other participant, he has no personal wish he wants granted from winning the Rider War. Instead, his goal is to protect innocent people from the Mirror Monsters and, most importantly, to stop the Riders from killing each other. He believes the Advent Decks were meant to be tools for protection, not instruments of a battle royale. This mission puts him into direct conflict with the very nature of the war, as he constantly tries to reason with other Riders and save them from their fates. Over time, he crystallizes his own desire: to close the Mirror World itself and end the Rider War forever.
His role in the story is that of an accidental protagonist who becomes the heart of the series. His persistent pacifism and refusal to fight other Riders slowly and profoundly affect those around him. His presence forces other participants to confront their own morality, and his selflessness earns him a strange respect, even from hardened fighters. He serves as a foil to the war's creator and to Riders who are willing to sacrifice anything for their wishes. His journey is one of maintaining his ideals in the face of a brutal system that demands he abandon them.
Key relationships are central to his development. His most important bond is with Ren Akiyama, Kamen Rider Knight, a cynical and pragmatic fighter who initially wants the Ryuki deck for himself. Despite their conflicting philosophies, Shinji’s persistent goodwill eventually breaks through Ren’s walls, and they develop a deep rivalry and friendship, with Shinji’s optimism tempering Ren’s darkness. He also forms a connection with Yui Kanzaki, the sister of the war’s mastermind, who helps him understand the Mirror World. Even his contract monster, Dragreder, is unique; because Shinji regularly feeds it by defeating monsters rather than people, the beast develops a notable loyalty, sometimes coming to his aid without being summoned.
Shinji undergoes significant development. Initially, he is troubled by the moral dilemma of stopping other Riders from pursuing their deeply held wishes, questioning his right to interfere. He struggles with his naivety, especially after being tricked into believing he killed someone, which drives him to the brink of quitting. However, he comes to understand that his desire to end the war and protect others is a valid wish in itself, giving him a clearer purpose. His commitment to his non-lethal principles never wavers, even as he becomes more determined and capable.
In terms of abilities as Kamen Rider Ryuki, Shinji is a balanced fighter with access to both melee and ranged attacks. His motif is a dragon, and his powers are fire-based. He uses a device called the Drag Visor to read Advent Cards. Key abilities include using the Sword Vent to summon the Drag Saber, a Chinese dao-style sword; the Strike Vent to equip the Drag Claw, which can fire powerful flames known as Drag Claw Fire; and the Guard Vent to summon the Drag Shield for defense. The Advent card summons his partner Dragreder to fight by his side. His standard finishing move is the Dragon Rider Kick, a flying side kick empowered by Dragreder's flames. Later, he obtains the Survive card, which allows him to evolve into Kamen Rider Ryuki Survive, a more powerful form. In this state, his Drag Visor evolves into the Drag Visor Zwei, granting him new weapons and abilities, including the Meteor Bullet shot and the Dragon Fire Storm, a devastating attack performed while riding Dragreder’s motorcycle-like alternate form, Dragranzer.
