Description
Kamen Rider Zolda is one of the thirteen Kamen Riders who appear in the series, known for his distinct heavy artillery-based fighting style. The identity of Kamen Rider Zolda is primarily associated with two characters: the successful but self-centered lawyer Kitaoka Shuichi, and his devoted assistant Yura Goro. The Rider shares a contract with the Mirror Monster known as Magnugiga, the Steel Giant, which is a minotaur-like creature whose body is covered in various weapon systems.
The character design of Zolda takes direct inspiration from a tank, a theme reflected in his heavy armor and overwhelming firepower. The suit stands 192 centimeters tall and weighs 110 kilograms. Its features include a Solid Face Shield made of an ultra-hard substance called Armetal, capable of absorbing shock and purifying pollutants. The Zolda Ear can detect obstacles within a ten-kilometer radius, while the Photo Electro eye can identify objects up to twenty kilometers away, making the suit exceptionally well-suited for long-range combat.
Personality-wise, the primary user, Kitaoka Shuichi, is initially presented as a selfish and arrogant individual. As a lawyer of considerable skill, he is accustomed to a luxurious lifestyle and is not above using morally questionable tactics to win cases or secure payment. His decision to enter the Rider War is driven by a purely selfish motivation: he has been diagnosed with a terminal illness and has only a short time left to live. His wish in the contest is to be granted eternal life, allowing him to continue enjoying his lavish existence. Despite his often abrasive exterior, a more complex and even compassionate side of Kitaoka emerges as the story progresses. He develops a reluctant respect for the protagonist Shinji Kishi and his ideals, and he secretly pays for a young girl's medical bills after initially refusing to help her.
The character who most often physically embodies Zolda in battle, especially later in the series, is Yura Goro. Goro is Kitaoka's faithful butler, chef, and bodyguard. Unlike his employer, Goro is kind-hearted, deeply loyal, and highly skilled in martial arts. He respects Kitaoka greatly and manages all the practical aspects of his life, from household chores to dealing with troublesome clients. Goro's close relationship with Kitaoka is the emotional core of Zolda's story, as he selflessly dedicates himself to his master's well-being.
In the context of the Rider War, Zolda holds the position of a powerful but often reluctant participant. Kitaoka does not actively seek out fights, preferring to manipulate events from the sidelines or eliminate other Riders when it is most convenient. His primary antagonistic relationship is with Asakura Takeshi, who transforms into Kamen Rider Ouja. This rivalry is deeply personal, as Kitaoka was once Asakura's lawyer and became disgusted by his violent nature. The development of Zolda is effectively the development of Kitaoka, who gradually shifts from a man solely focused on his own survival to one who takes genuine risks to protect others. Ultimately, Kitaoka voluntarily gives up the Rider War, acknowledging that his illness no longer allows him to fight. In the series finale, his wish for eternal life remains unfulfilled, but his loyal butler Goro takes up the Zolda deck one final time to face Ouja in his place.
Zolda's notable abilities are overwhelmingly focused on ranged firepower. This is a deliberate design choice, as the Rider's physical combat and hand-to-hand abilities are relatively low compared to others like Ryuki or Knight. His transformation is achieved using a V-Buckle belt and the Zolda Card Deck. His primary weapon and summoning device is the Magna Visor, a submachine gun that can fire 120 rounds per minute and serves as the activation key for his Final Vent.
Using Advent Cards, Zolda can summon a variety of powerful weapons. The Giga Launcher is a massive two-handed bazooka with immense destructive power, while the Giga Cannon is a pair of shoulder-mounted cannons that allow for heavy fire without sacrificing mobility. For defense, he can summon the Giga Armor, a large shield that can also be used as a counterweight for the Giga Launcher. His ultimate attack, triggered by the Final Vent card, is called End of World. For this attack, Zolda connects the Magna Visor to the back of his contract monster, Magnugiga. He then pulls the trigger, causing every weapon on the monster's body to fire simultaneously, devastating a wide area around him.
