Description
Chang Changku, designated Cyborg 006, is a member of the team of 00 cyborgs from China. His life before being captured and transformed by the Black Ghost organization varies across different versions of the story. In one common origin, Chang was the owner and head cook of a successful restaurant. His fortunes reversed when a fire-breathing performance intended to impress his customers went disastrously wrong, resulting in the complete destruction of his establishment. Having lost everything, including his home and livelihood, he fell into such despair that he fainted, and Black Ghost agents abducted him while he was unconscious. An alternate background depicts him as a poor farmer or pig farmer, suffering from failed crops and heavy taxes. Driven to hopelessness, he attempted to end his life by hanging, only to be stopped by Black Ghost agents who cut the rope and took him captive. In a third version, he was a failed restaurant owner whose wife left him, leading to similar suicidal despair before being captured.

Physically, Chang is typically depicted as a short, portly man with a round face, a large nose, and a thin, curly mustache. He has flatly combed black hair with a few stray strands. His eyes are often drawn in a distinctive, cartoonish three shape. His standard uniform is a red, double-breasted military jacket with padded shoulders, black armbands, a yellow scarf, and a black belt holding a holster for his blaster gun.

Chang's personality is defined by a cheerful and jovial nature, making him a constant source of morale for his fellow cyborgs. His warm disposition and hearty cooking often help lift the spirits of the team, filling both their hearts and their stomachs. Despite his generally friendly and sometimes goofy demeanor, he possesses a serious and focused side, particularly when it comes to his craft. As a chef, he is hardworking and can be a strict, demanding teacher when instructing others in the kitchen. He views everything as a potential ingredient, sometimes to the disgust of his teammates, such as when he offered to make soup from a lizard found by another cyborg. While he typically serves as comedic relief alongside fellow cyborg Great Britain, he has shown depth, forming deep bonds even with non-humans, such as a robot he befriended and tried to save.

His primary motivation is a desire for normalcy and the protection of his makeshift family. After escaping from Black Ghost, a recurring theme for Chang is his attempt to leave his cyborg life behind. He often opens a new restaurant or becomes a wealthy businessman and CEO, seeking a peaceful existence. However, when new threats emerge, he willingly gives up his civilian success to rejoin the 00 cyborgs and defend the world alongside his comrades.

In the narrative, Chang serves as the team's anti-ballistics and anti-personnel specialist, as well as its cook. His most powerful ability is to breathe extremely hot flames from his mouth, capable of reaching temperatures of up to 3,000 degrees Celsius. This fire can melt almost any known substance, including solid rock, allowing him to easily burrow tunnels through the ground for quick escapes or to launch surprise attacks from below. In some adaptations, his abilities are further enhanced, granting him a form of pyrokinesis that allows him to create constructs of fire, such as a dragon, to attack his enemies. Aside from his combat abilities, Chang is an exceptionally skilled cook, a talent that proves invaluable during missions, such as when he prepared meals from cave-dwelling bats while the team was hiding from Black Ghost.

Chang shares key relationships with several of his teammates. He has a notably close, love-hate friendship with Great Britain, Cyborg 007. Britain’s laid-back personality often serves as a foil to Chang’s more serious nature, and Britain frequently teases him, though Chang can give as good as he gets. Despite their bickering, there is deep mutual trust between them, and Chang is known to let Britain help out at his restaurant. He also acts as a mentor to the younger cyborgs when it comes to cooking, once teaching most of the team the importance of preparing food, an experience that showed his serious and demanding side.

Chang shows notable development across the various storylines. In the graphic novel adaptation, his backstory includes the added depth of a wife who left him due to his failures, deepening his despair before being turned into a cyborg. In the OVA Conclusion: GODS WAR, an alternate version of Chang shows a more gluttonous side, consuming massive amounts of food, and his powers are portrayed as being significantly more advanced, achieving near-pyrokinesis. Underlying all his appearances is a consistent character arc of a man who, having hit rock bottom and lost everything, finds a new purpose and family as a cyborg, even if he repeatedly tries to return to a quiet, civilian life as a chef.
