Description
Dr. Isaac Gilmore is a human scientist who serves as the creator, mentor, and surrogate father figure to the nine 00 Cyborgs. His history is fundamentally tied to the global terrorist organization known as Black Ghost, for which he was originally a leading researcher in their cybernetic soldier program. While he joined Black Ghost, driven by an arrogant quest for knowledge and a desire to work alongside the famed Nobel Prize-winning scientist Professor Brown, the reality of the organization's methods soon weighed heavily on him. The turning point came during the conversion of the man who would become Cyborg 005. Gilmore vehemently objected to the use of an inferior, cheaper artificial heart for the procedure, but his concerns were dismissed by colleagues who viewed the test subjects as expendable and easily replaced. The sheer moral conflict of this moment caused Gilmore to suffer a heart attack. After witnessing the agonizing conversions of Cyborgs 006, 007, and 008, and with guilt finally overwhelming his ambition, he resolved to defect. With the telepathic aid of the infant Cyborg 001, Gilmore orchestrated the escape of all nine cyborgs from Black Ghost's headquarters.

Following their escape, Gilmore dedicated his life to atoning for his role in their creation. He acts as the team's primary ally and caretaker, operating out of a hidden underground facility where he provides essential maintenance, performs repairs on their damaged cybernetic bodies, and develops critical system upgrades. His scientific expertise covers cybernetics, engineering, and medicine, making him the only person capable of ensuring the cyborgs' survival when they are injured in battle. He also leverages his extensive network within the global scientific community to gather intelligence and analyze the various supernatural or technological threats the team faces, often serving as their strategic mission control.

Personality-wise, Dr. Gilmore is defined by a blend of wisdom and paternal kindness, though he is not without a quick temper. He is a compassionate and brilliant man whose primary motivation is protection. He seeks to shield the cyborgs from the organization that created them and to help them preserve their humanity, feeling personally responsible for their suffering. In quieter moments, he offers not just technical advice but emotional support, helping cyborgs like 009 cope with lost memories or the desire for a normal life. His relationships with the cyborgs are central to his character; he is a steadfast guardian, and they look to him as a father figure. His relationship with the infant Ivan Whisky, Cyborg 001, is particularly deep, as the boy was instrumental in their escape and remains a close confidant.

The character's development across various iterations of the story often implies a tragic past that informs his present resolve. It is frequently suggested that Gilmore is a Holocaust survivor, having lost many family members and friends during World War II. This trauma is directly exploited by the villain Skull, who taunts Gilmore with threats of burning the cyborgs in furnaces—a deliberate evocation of those atrocities. This taunt instead fuels Gilmore with the righteous anger needed to defeat his foe. While specific details of his ethnicity vary across adaptations—sometimes identified as Russian Jewish, while earlier works implied American or Italian origins—his core experience as a survivor of profound loss remains a consistent underlying theme.

Physically, Dr. Gilmore is consistently depicted as a short, elderly man with a wizened face, distinct spiky gray hair combed backward, thick eyebrows, and a very prominent, bulbous nose. His signature attire, especially after leaving Black Ghost, typically consists of a brown suit complemented by a large, oversized red bow tie. His notable abilities are not combat-oriented but intellectual and technical; his genius-level expertise in cybernetics and his deep knowledge of Black Ghost's operations are his greatest weapons, making him an indispensable asset in the cyborgs' ongoing fight for freedom and justice.
