Description
Pyuuma, also spelled Pyunma, is the character commonly known as Cyborg 008, one of the nine 00 cyborgs at the center of the Cyborg 009 story. He is a young man of African origin, and the details of his past have been retold differently over the years. In the original manga, he belonged to an African tribe and was destined to be sold into slavery. He managed to break his chains and escape, but when he was cornered by slave drivers, agents of the criminal syndicate Black Ghost appeared, killed his pursuers, and took him prisoner to be transformed into a cyborg. In the 2001 anime continuity, his homeland is the fictional Muamba Republic, where he served as a soldier in a rebellion against an oppressive government before being captured by Black Ghost. Earlier versions of the story placed his birthplace in Kenya, and later works moved away from the slavery-related origin in favor of a more general African setting. His earliest visual design was also revised over time as later versions sought to avoid an insensitive stereotype in his appearance.
Because of his past, Pyuuma stands apart from his teammates as the only 00 cyborg with genuine military training and combat experience from before his conversion.
