TV-Series
Description
The character known as Doraemon is also referred to as Albert in certain English-language dubs of the series, most notably the Cinar dub. He is a male robotic cat who travels back in time from the 22nd century to the present day. Doraemon is the elder brother of another robotic cat named Dorami.
Doraemon's background begins in a factory. He was created on September 3, 2112, at the Matsushiba Robot Factory. He was originally painted yellow and possessed a pair of ears. However, a robot mouse gnawed off his ears, an event that not only left him with a deep, lifelong phobia of mice but also led to a period of intense sadness. While in a state of emotional distress, he accidentally consumed a potion designed to induce sorrow. As he wept profusely, the yellow paint washed off his body, revealing the blue color that he is now famous for. His voice also deepened as a result of this incident. Furthermore, a factory accident involving electrocution caused many of his advanced robotic features to malfunction, marking him as a substandard product compared to other robots.
In terms of personality, Doraemon is generally kind, friendly, and intelligent, possessing a great deal of common sense. He acts as a responsible, if often exasperated, caretaker. Despite being a robot, he displays many human-like traits. He has a great fondness for dorayaki, a sweet filled pancake, which is his favorite food. One of his most notable character quirks is his extreme and irrational fear of mice; even seeing one or hearing the word can send him into a panic. He also becomes quite angry when people mistake him for a raccoon dog due to his lack of ears. While usually calm, he has a tendency to panic in emergencies, frantically searching his pocket and pulling out all sorts of unrelated household items before finding the gadget he needs.
Doraemon's primary motivation and role in the story is to improve the life of a preteen boy named Nobita Nobi. He was sent back in time by Nobita's great-great-grandson, Sewashi. In the original timeline, Nobita suffered from constant misfortune, including poor grades, bullying, and eventual financial ruin. To change this future, Sewashi sent Doraemon to act as a guardian and guide for his young ancestor. Although Sewashi originally wanted a super-robot, his limited allowance could only afford Doraemon, a factory-rejected model.
Doraemon lives as an unofficial member of Nobita's family, sleeping in a closet in Nobita's room. His key relationship is with Nobita, whom he both helps and scolds. He is long-suffering due to Nobita's laziness, poor judgment, and tendency to misuse his gadgets, but their bond is deep and they are best friends. Doraemon is also friends with Nobita's classmates, Shizuka, Suneo, and Gian. He maintains a friendly, unrequited infatuation with Mii-chan, a local cat.
Throughout the series, Doraemon shows subtle development. While his core mission to help Nobita remains constant, he becomes more integrated into the family and his friendship with Nobita deepens, moving from a simple caretaker relationship to one of mutual reliance and affection. He learns to be more patient and understanding, even as he continues to be frustrated by Nobita's antics.
Doraemon's most notable ability is his fourth-dimensional pocket, a pouch on his abdomen that contains a vast array of futuristic gadgets from a department store in the 22nd century. He can pull out almost any device imaginable to solve problems, from the Bamboo-Copter for flying to the Anywhere Door for instant travel. Other features include a nose that can be programmed with a task and a red tail that acts as an off switch; pulling it will shut him down completely.
