Description
The character at the center of Babel II - Beyond Infinity is a teenage boy who goes by the name Koichi Kamiya in this adaptation, though his surname varies across different versions of the story. He is 17 years old and was raised in an orphanage before being adopted by Dr. Taizo Furumi, a school principal, becoming the adoptive brother of Yumiko Furumi. At the start of the narrative, he appears to be an ordinary high school student with a talent for tennis, which is subtly aided by his ability to glimpse the immediate future.

Koichi is consistently portrayed as kind, optimistic, and possessing a maternal, caring nature toward those who are younger or weaker than himself. However, his personality carries a notable complexity that sets him apart from a typical hero. He is often sober and rarely smiles, which contributes to an aura of isolation. In his role as a protector, he demonstrates a pragmatic and sometimes ruthless streak, willing to employ morally questionable tactics to achieve his goals. For instance, he has been known to take enemies hostage or deliberately flood a base, endangering subordinates to exploit an opponent's loyalty to their own men. This calculated approach blurs the line between heroic defense and cold pragmatism, showing a character who prioritizes the protection of Earth over maintaining a morally clean image.

His primary motivation is thrust upon him rather than chosen. He is disturbed by recurring nightmares of an ancient tower in a desert, which is the call of the alien Babel I. He is subsequently declared the legitimate successor, Babel II, and inheritor of the "Babel Legacy". His mission becomes clear: to protect the Earth and humanity from the evil forces of Lord Yomi, a powerful psychic and another descendant of Babel I who seeks world domination. Unlike a traditional hero who gathers allies, Koichi fights to preserve the world from a position of profound solitude, relying on his inherited powers and servants rather than building a network of human comrades.

In his battle against Lord Yomi, Koichi's primary antagonists are the members of the ADES organization, a powerful global syndicate controlled by Yomi. Key figures within this group include Leon, a student council president fueled by hatred, and Ferris, a school counselor who acts as a spy. On the side of order, he forms a significant alliance with Reika Saeki, a young and beautiful agent of the United Nations Intelligent Team (UNIAS), who provides him with valuable support. His most loyal companions, however, are three powerful, non-human entities created by Babel I: Rohdem, a black panther who can stretch and change shape; Robross, a giant bird-like creature capable of supersonic flight; and Poseidon, a colossal humanoid robot built for underwater combat. These three servants respond to his telepathic call and are instrumental in his fights.

Throughout the 13-episode series, Koichi undergoes significant development as he grows into his role. Initially a reluctant student who has just discovered his heritage, he gradually gains experience and confidence in using his vast psychic powers. His journey forces him to confront not only external enemies but also the heavy responsibilities and moral compromises that come with being Earth's designated protector. A key theme explored through his character is the co-existence of light and darkness within a person, a concept that becomes more prominent as the series progresses. Furthermore, his existence is a lonely one; he has few friends and operates from the isolated Tower of Babel, embodying the archetype of a superhuman who has surpassed ordinary humanity.

Koichi's notable abilities are extensive and rooted in his alien lineage. He possesses tremendous psychic power that manifests in numerous ways, including telepathy, telekinesis, and energy projection in the form of destructive rays or shockwaves. His physical capabilities are far beyond human norms, granting him superhuman strength sufficient to destroy buildings, enhanced agility, and accelerated regeneration that can heal fatal wounds almost instantly. He can also levitate, teleport, create protective force fields, and see into the future. In Beyond Infinity, he can enter a "Babel Incarnation Mode" where the spirit of Babel I temporarily possesses him, granting even greater power. Despite this impressive arsenal, his powers are not limitless. Extensive use leads to severe fatigue, and overexertion carries the risk of rapid aging and physical deterioration. Consequently, he often relies on the strategic use of his three faithful servants to overcome his enemies.
