Description
Kenichi is a human character who appears as one of Astro Boy's closest friends and classmates. His origins predate Astro Boy himself, as he is adapted from Kenichi Shikishima, one of the first characters created by Osamu Tezuka and the creator's first boy hero, who debuted in 1948. Kenichi is a part of the Osamu Tezuka Star System, a group of recurring character designs the author used across many different manga and anime series. In many of these appearances, including the 2001 film Metropolis, the detective Shunsaku Ban is portrayed as Kenichi's uncle, with the pair often working together as a family of detectives.

Throughout the various Astro Boy television series, Kenichi is consistently depicted as a very positive, smart, and outgoing young student. He is known for being devoted to his friends and is often a voice of reason in his class. In the 1980 series, where he is sometimes called Kenneth, Kenichi holds the position of class president and is one of the first students to befriend Astro when he joins the school. He is portrayed as prudent and level-headed, typically being the first to respond calmly when chaos erupts around him.

The 2003 anime series provides the most significant character development for Kenichi. In this version, he is an avid soccer player for a citywide league and a member of a friend group called the Sky Riders. He is notable for being the first child in Astro's class to accept him and immediately welcomes the robot boy into his circle of friends. One episode centers on a moral conflict where Kenichi accidentally touches a soccer ball with his hand during a crucial game, a foul that only Astro notices. The win that follows makes Kenichi feel deeply embarrassed and angry at himself. He isolates himself for days, struggling with his conscience, but when Astro is later put in danger, Kenichi immediately rushes to help him. This event solidifies his commitment to being an honest sportsman, showing his fundamental good nature and his capacity for personal growth. In this same series, his character design gives him brown skin, implying a diverse heritage that distinguishes him from other characters.

Kenichi's role is primarily that of a loyal human friend who helps ground Astro and connect him to the world of ordinary people. His motivations are typically driven by loyalty, a sense of fairness, and a desire to help his friends. He appears in the film Metropolis as a young detective who becomes separated from his uncle and discovers the robot Tima. A modified version of the character appears in the preschool-oriented series Little Astro Boy, renamed simply as Ken. This version is an athlete who speaks in rhyme and slang, and he leads the opening dance with Astro in each episode. While not possessing any superhuman abilities, Kenichi is characterized by his strong moral compass, his intelligence, and his athletic skill in soccer, which serve as his primary contributions to the stories.
