Description
Detective Tawashi is a prominent police detective in Metro City, recognized for his no-nonsense attitude and a frequent point of conflict for the hero Astro Boy. His name, meaning scourer or polishing brush in Japanese, is visually reflected in the unique design of his nose, which is shaped like that very object. Physically, he is a tall, lean, middle-aged human man who is almost entirely bald, save for a few stray hairs and a prominent, full mustache. He is almost always seen dressed in either formal three-piece suits or a standard police uniform. In some of the older series, his wardrobe is famously topped with an undersized bowler hat.
The core of his personality is defined by a gruff, standoffish, and often suspicious nature. He adheres to an old-fashioned style of policing, which frequently leads him to jump to conclusions, with a notable bias toward blaming robots for the crimes and disasters he investigates. This prejudice puts him in direct opposition to Astro Boy, whom he is often quick to accuse. Despite his frustrating mannerisms and flawed reasoning, Tawashi is genuinely dedicated to his work. His primary motivation is to solve mysteries and remove dangerous criminals from the streets, and he takes law and order extremely seriously.
Within the story, Tawashi serves as a representative of the human authority that is often suspicious of robots, creating a recurring source of tension. In the 1980 anime adaptation, this trait is amplified; he is portrayed as exceptionally gruff and eager to blame major disasters on a berserker robot, which frequently leads to loud arguments with Professor Ochanomizu. However, in the 2003 series, his character becomes more rational and level-headed. While he remains distrustful of free-thinking robots, he gradually builds trust in Astro Boy and other robots like Delta, demonstrating a capacity for growth. In this version, he works without his usual superior, Chief Nakamura, and instead often partners with Professor Ochanomizu on cases involving robots.
His key relationships often highlight his stubborn character. He frequently clashes with Astro Boy and Professor Ochanomizu due to his anti-robot sentiments. A notable exception is his dynamic with Chief Nakamura, who is portrayed as more level-headed and is the only person Tawashi allows to correct or banter with him. He also has a particularly strong distaste for the criminal Skunk Kusai, dedicating significant effort to keeping him behind bars. Over the course of the various series, Tawashi shows a degree of development. While his core personality remains gruff, later portrayals soften his outright hatred of robots, showing him become more accepting, particularly as Astro Boy repeatedly proves his heroism. As a human, he possesses no superhuman abilities, but his notable skills include his relentless dedication to police work and a very practical, if sometimes misguided, approach to solving crimes.
