TV-Series
Description
Osamu Mikumo is one of the main protagonists of World Trigger. He is a fifteen-year-old student who initially attends Third Mikado City Middle School and later studies at First Mikado City High School. He stands 168 centimeters tall and is commonly called Four Eyes by people outside his squad because of his glasses. He serves as a B-rank agent of Border, an organization that defends his world from other-dimensional invaders known as Neighbors, and he leads the Tamakoma-2 unit, which is also known as the Mikumo Squad.
Osamu's backstory is closely tied to the Amatori family. His tutor was Rinji Amatori, an investigator who studied Neighbors before he disappeared. Rinji promised to take Osamu through the Gate one day, but he broke that promise and instead entrusted Osamu with the care of his younger sister, Chika Amatori. Osamu tried to join Border in order to protect her but was initially rejected. He later attempted to sneak in and speak with the recruiters, was attacked by a Trion Soldier, and was saved by Yuuichi Jin. That rescue led him to join Border. He began as a C-rank attacker and was later promoted to B-rank, eventually taking on the role of Shooter and squad leader.
In terms of personality, Osamu is an exceptionally honest person, a quality confirmed by Yuma Kuga, whose side effect allows him to detect lies, and this honesty is the foundation of Yuma's strong trust in him. Osamu is highly determined and courageous, with a strong sense of justice, and he consistently goes out of his way to help others even when doing so puts him in danger. He disapproves of violence as a solution to personal conflicts, believes in following rules, and prefers to resolve problems through calm and lawful means. He is also prone to self-doubt and hesitation, especially in the early part of the series, because he is painfully aware of his own limitations, but he remains resilient and refuses to give up.
Osamu's core motivation is the desire to protect others, especially Chika Amatori. Yuuichi Jin suggests that helping others, and Chika in particular, is the real reason Osamu joined Border. Osamu also wants to safeguard his friends and the people of Japan from the threat of Neighbors, and he takes his responsibilities as a Border agent very seriously even though he lacks the raw power of many of his peers.
Among his teammates, Osamu is the strategist and leader. Where Yuma Kuga is exceptionally strong in close combat, Chika Amatori possesses enormous trion reserves, and their other allies have their own specialties, Osamu stands out for his mind rather than his physical abilities. His role in the story is to plan, coordinate, and find unconventional solutions that allow his squad to succeed despite his personal weakness in battle.
His key relationships shape his growth. Yuma Kuga is his closest friend and ally, and their mutual trust is central to the story. Chika Amatori is his childhood friend and the person he is most determined to protect. Yuuichi Jin saved his life and inspired him to become an agent, and Jin continues to support and defend him within Border. He also learns a great deal from Karasuma, who becomes his combat instructor, and he trains with the Arashiyama and Tachikawa squads to sharpen his skills. Over time, senior agents such as Kazama come to respect his tactical abilities.
Osamu develops considerably over the course of the series. He begins as a discouraged agent with poor combat results and a low opinion of his own worth, but through rigorous training and experience he becomes a competent and resourceful fighter. He improves his accuracy as a Shooter, learns to delay his shots to catch enemies off guard, and gains confidence as a leader. A significant milestone is his ability to outwit a far more experienced opponent, Hyrein, and prevent Hyrein from capturing Chika. He also becomes skilled in negotiation tactics, learning techniques from Netsuki to guide the direction of a conversation during tense situations.
In combat, Osamu's defining trait is his low trion level, which limits both the power of his attacks and the number of triggers he can equip at once, a maximum of six. To compensate, he relies on his high strategic and tactical intelligence, which is praised even by top-tier personnel. As an attacker, he uses the Raygust trigger in both blade mode and shield mode, frequently combining it with the Thruster option to increase the speed of his strikes, close the distance to opponents, dodge, or push enemies into unfavorable positions, including through a technique called Shield Charge. As a Shooter, his main offensive trigger is Asteroid, which he usually divides into many small pieces to spread his fire, and he has developed tricks such as delayed shots and the Slow Buckshot technique. He also uses Spider wires to control the battlefield, Bagworm to hide from enemy radar, and Shield for defense. He possesses no side effect of his own, so his success depends entirely on preparation, intelligence, and determination.
