Description
Aldo Morini conducts at Leiden's opera house. He is the father of Hugo Morini, who died in the war after becoming engaged to opera singer Irma Felice. Aldo counseled Irma to abandon hope for Hugo’s return, though he privately wrestled with accepting his son’s loss. He commissioned Auto Memory Doll Violet Evergarden to write a love letter for Irma, who sought authentic emotion for a modern war-themed opera. Violet initially misconstrued the letter as intended for a real recipient. During the process, Aldo’s unresolved grief and connection to Irma’s loss surfaced. Irma aimed to transmute personal tragedy into art reflecting war’s human toll. Violet ultimately crafted a heartfelt letter drawn from Irma’s memories of Hugo, meeting the opera’s demand for truth. Aldo enabled this creative endeavor rooted in mutual mourning. He observed Irma perform the letter in the opera, a moment encapsulating their shared remembrance of Hugo. His journey navigates loss while supporting Irma’s artistic tribute, exposing his internal conflict between advocating acceptance and harboring hope.
