Flam Karim, a 22-year-old male lieutenant in Special Fire Force Company 1, serves as both a priest and a fire officer. Born December 12, he stands 178.5 cm tall, weighs 73 kg, and has AB blood type. His appearance features short, straight dark grey hair brushed forward with shaved sides, and small, dark eyes that frequently convey irritation. He wears a dark cassock, a light high-collared overcoat, dark shoes, and a cross pendant, eschewing standard bunker gear for this commander uniform shared within Company 1. Headphones and musical instruments are constant companions, especially in combat.
Karim exhibits a serious, cautious nature coupled with open disrespect toward strangers, often insulting them. His speech habitually repeats phrases, complicating communication. Despite being brash and quick-tempered, he respects colleagues and strictly follows Company 1 protocols. Strong leadership skills and a justice-driven mindset prioritize truth over personal bonds, exemplified when he exposed teammate Rekka Hoshimiya’s crimes to Company 8. He deeply cherished friendships with Rekka and Foien Li, but Rekka’s betrayal and death ignited intense guilt and self-loathing. These feelings fuel his resolve to investigate the Evangelist, seeking answers about Rekka’s motives and his own failure to detect the betrayal.
A Second Generation pyrokinetic, his Thermoacoustic Refrigeration ability converts heat into sound, then into cold air via friction, rapidly generating ice through repetition. Specialized instruments—a wind device and a bell—amplify this power. The bell emits alarming noises to collect heat, while the primary instrument launches icicles or encases targets in ice. He likens the process to air conditioning. His precise control forms breathing pockets within ice and instantly freezes phenomena like firestorms. Strategically adept, he crafts complex plans, such as coordinating with Tamaki Kotatsu to freeze her flames mid-air for sniper cover.
His background includes training newcomers and upholding Company 1’s integrity. During Shinra Kusakabe and Arthur Boyle’s probation, he planted an Infernal-creating insect in his desk to test their suspicions, confirming Rekka as the artificial Infernals culprit. Confronting Rekka, Karim froze him to prevent harm, but Rekka was killed by the White-Clad. Foien Li saved Karim from an arrow, losing an arm—a loss driving Karim’s alliance with Company 8 to probe the Evangelist and Rekka’s ties.
After Captain Leonard Burns’s death, Karim and Foien Li investigated St. Raffles Convent, uncovering an underground lab experimenting on nuns (including Hibana and Iris) using Fire Bugs to create doppelgängers and pyrokinetics. Sister Sumire attacked, destroying Karim’s instrument and incapacitating him with vibrations. Sumire summoned Infernalized children, but Karim’s group escaped via Kishiri’s aid and a Lady in Black distraction. This revealed Iris as the Eighth Pillar and a First Pillar doppelgänger.
Later, Karim connected stone pillars to Sumire’s experiments. He collaborates with Company 8 and Benimaru Shinmon against escalating Infernal threats, focusing investigations on the Evangelist’s motives and links between pillars, Adolla Bursts, and the Great Cataclysm.
