Description
Artesia Som Deikun, later adopting the name Sayla Mass, is the daughter of philosopher-politician Zeon Zum Deikun and younger sister of Casval Rem Deikun. After her father's sudden death during a speech declaring Side 3's independence, she and Casval were evacuated from Munzo by family friend Jimba Ral to escape political purges by the Zabi family. They relocated to Earth under the protection of Spanish benefactor Don Teabolo Mass, assuming new identities: Casval became Édouard Mass and Artesia became Sayla Mass. Jimba Ral frequently reminded Casval of the Zabi betrayal, shielding the younger Artesia from these discussions.

Following an assassination attempt that killed Jimba Ral, Artesia and her brother moved to the Texas Colony under Roger Aznable's guardianship, though Don Mass retained responsibility for their care. There, they learned of their mother Astraia Tor Deikun's death. Deeply affected, Artesia spent significant time at her mother's pseudonymous grave. The subsequent death of her cat Lucifer compounded her grief. Casval, alongside Roger Aznable's son Char, then departed for Side 3 to join Zeon's military. Artesia believed Casval perished when his shuttle reportedly exploded. Years later, she pursued medical studies at Side 7.

During the One Year War, Artesia worked as a nurse at Miranda Central Hospital in Loum. An encounter with Tachi O'Hara revealed Casval was alive, operating as the Zeon ace pilot Char Aznable. News of Don Teabolo Mass's failing health prompted her return to Texas Colony. Roger Aznable confirmed Casval had assumed Char's identity but expressed dismay at the person he became. Amid civil unrest in Texas Colony, where rioters attacked perceived Zeon sympathizers, Artesia defended her home with a rifle, killing and injuring attackers. Don Teabolo Mass died during the conflict. The battle ceased when Zeon destroyed a nearby passenger ship carrying Roger Aznable; Artesia witnessed Char's red mobile suit overlooking the scene.

Artesia evacuated Side 7 aboard the SCV-70 White Base during a Zeon attack. While searching the colony for survivors, she encountered Char Aznable, recognizing him as Casval. He escaped, and she joined the White Base crew as a communications officer. She later became an alternate pilot for the RX-78-2 Gundam and eventually piloted the G-Fighter/Core Booster. During Ramba Ral's boarding of the White Base, he recognized her as Artesia, having known her in childhood. His subsequent death deeply affected her, as did the loss of comrades Ryu Jose and Matilda Ajan. Artesia's attempts to contact Char culminated at Texas Colony, where he revealed his plan to avenge their father by assassinating the Zabi family and gave her gold bars to start a new life. She entrusted the gold to White Base captain Bright Noa for crew distribution.

At the Battle of A Baoa Qu, Artesia piloted a customized GM mobile suit, destroying a Braw Bro piloted by Simus Al Bakharov before ejecting and crash-landing inside the fortress. Captured by Zeon forces, she revealed her identity as Artesia Som Deikun during interrogation. This prompted Zeon security captain Matogurosu to pledge his forces to her cause. Leading these troops, she encountered Amuro Ray and Char engaged in combat. Her intervention created an opening for Amuro to wound Char, who ordered them to leave while he pursued the Zabis. Separated from Amuro by an explosion, she was rescued through his telepathic coordination with other White Base crew members.

After the war, Artesia established a foundation caring for war-orphaned children, including Jill and Milly Ratokie. During the Gryps Conflict, she watched her brother, now known as Quattro Bajeena, deliver a televised speech in Dakar. Later, Kai Shiden visited her to discuss Quattro's disappearance. In the First Neo Zeon War, she rescued Leina Ashta during a battle and later informed Bright Noa she worked as an investor while expressing concern over her brother's dangerous ambitions. A year after the Second Neo Zeon War, she discussed with Stephanie Luio and Kikka Kobayashi the profound influence Lalah Sune had on both Char and Amuro, noting Lalah's death created an unresolved conflict between them that only ceased at A Baoa Qu upon hearing Lalah's voice.

Artesia shared a complex relationship with Amuro Ray, deepening through shared combat experiences and Newtype abilities. Novels depict a romantic relationship developing during their service on White Base. After Amuro's death, she conveyed to Char that he had killed the man she loved. In the manga "Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam Define," she worked as a doctor in North America, and her romantic relationship with Amuro continued post-war.
