Description
**Kotona Takashina:** A Tokyo high school student living a typical life centered around school, her boyfriend Haruto Ichihara, and close friend Yusuke Ninomiya. Occasional jealousy over Haruto's admirers punctuates her routine. This ordinary existence shatters when a mysterious stalker stabs her with a cursed dagger, witnessed by Haruto and Yusuke. While her friends vanish during a rescue attempt, Kotona is left critically wounded. Subsequent medical tests reveal a malignant tumor, giving her only three months to live. Her health declines rapidly, necessitating sedation. After events resolve in a linked world, her tumor is miraculously removed, leading to full recovery. A side effect completely erases her memories of Yusuke, though she resumes a happy life with Haruto.
**Astrid Astrum:** Princess of Evermore in a parallel fantasy world and Kotona's soulmate, sharing her appearance and fondness for sour oranges. Motherless, Astrid inherited a protective dagger and the Aegis Spell—a magical defense harming attackers—from her late mother. She navigates political and personal threats, surviving an assassination attempt with the same cursed dagger that injured Kotona. Saved when Yusuke removes the blade, she later performs the Magic Sealing Dance at the Lake of Purity to cleanse the curse's lingering effects. Astrid shows compassion, protesting mistreatment of Yusuke and Haruto and opposing the kingdom's Colosseum battles. During Evermore's invasion by the Black Banner army, she lends her mother's dagger to Yusuke, trusting its power against magical barriers. She confronts her uncle, Sedulus Astrum (disguised as court mage Gnauss Wissden and Black Banner leader Galeroth), exposing his role in the assassination plot by invoking her Aegis Spell's defensive wounds. She fights alongside Haruto against Galeroth. Post-victory, she urges Yusuke to return home, only to learn his true origin lies in Ni no Kuni, allowing him to stay. Their relationship deepens, culminating in his coronation as king alongside her.
**Soulmate Link:** Kotona and Astrid's fates are intrinsically bound. The curse inflicted on Astrid manifests as Kotona's terminal illness; Astrid's magical healing directly results in Kotona's physical recovery. This connection underscores their shared existence across worlds, though they never directly interact or become aware of each other. Astrid's story concludes in Evermore as a ruler, while Kotona continues her life in Tokyo, both living separately yet connected through their mirrored survival and restored wellbeing.
