Description
Kyouka Izumi is a fourteen-year-old girl who serves as a member of the Armed Detective Agency, having defected from her previous life as an assassin for the Port Mafia. She possesses a calm, reserved, and stoic demeanor, often displaying few outward emotions and speaking only when necessary. This seemingly cold exterior initially masks a deep-seated trauma and a profound self-loathing, as she was conditioned to believe she was nothing more than a tool for killing, incapable of living in the light. Despite her quiet nature, she harbors a strong will and a courageous heart, and she is easily fascinated by the simple, joyful aspects of ordinary life she was long denied, such as eating crêpes or visiting the aquarium, revealing an innocence befitting her age.
Her motivations are rooted in a desperate desire to escape her past as a killer. Having been forced to take thirty-five lives, she developed a powerful wish to never kill again and to live as a normal person. This desire drives her to seek redemption and prove that she is more than just "carnage incarnate," a label imposed upon her by the mafia. She is determined to use her abilities to protect others rather than to slaughter, a goal she strives to achieve as a member of the Armed Detective Agency. Her primary motivation is to live in the world of light shown to her by her partner, Atsushi Nakajima, and to prove that she can be a good person despite her past.
Within the story of Dead Apple, Kyouka plays a significant role as one of the central characters working to resolve the crisis. When a mysterious fog descends upon Yokohama, causing ability users to be attacked by their own powers, Kyouka and Atsushi are among those who investigate. She feels an uneasy sense of deja vu upon seeing the face of Tatsuhiko Shibusawa, the mastermind behind the phenomenon. When the fog appears, she finds herself unable to summon her own ability and is forced to flee. She and Atsushi eventually encounter their former enemy, Ryunosuke Akutagawa, and the three form a temporary alliance to stop Shibusawa. A key moment in the film is Kyouka's confrontation with her own ability, Demon Snow, which has turned against her. With Atsushi's help, she is able to overcome this trial and successfully regain control of her power to fight against the main threat.
Her most significant relationship is with Atsushi Nakajima, who saved her from a suicide bombing and offered her a path away from the mafia. He is her closest companion and the person who showed her a life beyond killing, and she lives in the same dormitory as him. She holds a deep sense of gratitude and trust towards him. Her past ties to the Port Mafia are complex; she fears figures like Akutagawa, who once remotely controlled her ability via a phone, but also shares a bond with Kouyou Ozaki, who acted as her mentor. Her relationship with Akutagawa shifts from one of controller and pawn to reluctant allies in Dead Apple. Within the Armed Detective Agency, she is protected and accepted, with the agency's president, Yukichi Fukuzawa, playing a crucial role in allowing her to control her own ability.
Throughout the series, Kyouka undergoes considerable development. She begins as an emotionless assassin who has resigned herself to death, believing she is unworthy of life. After meeting Atsushi, she gradually learns to value her own existence and makes the conscious choice to leave the darkness of the mafia. She transitions from a girl who only knew how to solve problems through killing to one who actively tries to find other solutions, though her mafia-trained instincts can sometimes resurface. The most profound part of her development is her reconciliation with her own ability, Demon Snow. She initially hated it as the entity that killed her parents, but she later learns the truth that her mother used the ability to protect her, allowing her to accept Demon Snow as a legacy of her parents' love rather than a curse.
Kyouka possesses a supernatural ability named Demon Snow, or Yaksha White Snow. This ability materializes a phantom figure clad in white armor wielding a sword. The phantom is incredibly fast, powerful, and can phase through solid objects, making it immune to physical attacks. Originally, the ability was not under Kyouka's direct control; it could only be commanded via voice commands from the specific cell phone she carries, and for a long time, those commands came from her handler, Akutagawa. It is later revealed that Demon Snow was originally her mother's ability, which was transferred to Kyouka in a rushed and incomplete state on the night her parents were killed trying to protect her. After joining the Armed Detective Agency, President Fukuzawa's ability, All Men Are Created Equal, allows Kyouka to finally control Demon Snow of her own free will. In addition to her supernatural power, Kyouka is a highly skilled assassin, possessing excellent memory, physical agility, and proficiency with bladed weapons, even without using her ability.
