Description
Nottorei are the recurring foot soldiers of the Notraiders in the anime Star Twinkle Precure. They are mass-produced minions that serve the higher-ranking members of the Notraiders, most often accompanying Kappard and Tenjo. Their name is derived from the Japanese word notto, meaning to take over, reflecting their role as disposable enforcers of the Notraiders’ goal to dominate the universe by collecting the Princess Star Color Pens and capturing the fairy Fuwa.
In appearance, Nottorei are humanoid but largely uniform and robotic in design. They are primarily light grey in color, with dark grey sleeves and a belt, and they wear white gloves and white boots with dark grey tops. They come in different sizes; on occasion, a giant Nottorei is created by Tenjo, such as when she transformed one of Elena’s brothers into a Nottorei in episode 14, or when she turned herself into a giant version in episode 43. A giant cactus-themed Nottorei also appears in episode 34, created from the character Saboten adult Saboro.
Nottorei lack individual personality or independent motivation. They exist solely to carry out orders from their Notraider commanders and to delay, harass, or attack the Pretty Cure. They are not particularly strong in combat; the Cures usually defeat standard-sized Nottorei quickly. However, they possess a few notable abilities. They can fly using rocket shoes, giving them mobility in battles that often take place in space or on the ground. They are armed with laser guns, which they use against the Cures in early episodes, though these weapons are ultimately ineffective. Later in the series, after Garuouga and Darknest upgrade the Notraiders’ powers, Tenjo gains the ability to seal a person inside a Nottorei by twisting their imagination, effectively turning victims into unwilling mindless soldiers.
The Nottorei do not develop as characters because they are not individuals. They serve as a constant low-level threat throughout the series, appearing in many episodes to provide filler combat before the main villain of the episode is confronted. Their key relationship is with the Notraider commanders who deploy them, especially Kappard and Tenjo. In the final arc, the Cures manage to purify large numbers of Nottorei by using the Twinkle Imagination attack, causing their armor to release and the victims trapped inside (if any) to return to normal. This purification underscores the series’ theme that even those misled by darkness can be saved through imagination and hope.
