Description
Daisuke Nikaidō held the ace pitcher position for Meisei Academy's junior high baseball team, a role granted largely through favoritism extended by the coaching staff influenced by his father, the wealthy chairman of Nikaidou Electronics and a prominent school alumnus. This preferential treatment continued even with other talented pitchers like Toma Tachibana present.

Nikaidō faced a significant health challenge, diagnosed with a heart condition during his first year. He deliberately concealed this diagnosis from teammates and coaches; only his family, his doctor, and team manager Kuroyanagi knew. Despite the condition, he remained fiercely determined to play baseball and retain his pitching role.

On the mound, Nikaidō exhibited a strong competitive drive and deep emotional investment in games, diligently following strategic calls from his catchers, first Tadashi Imagawa and later Soichiro Tachibana. His pitching, however, proved unremarkable—lacking notable speed or movement—and he battled limited stamina during play. His tenure included participation in tournament matches where Meisei achieved unexpected success, advancing further than in prior years.

The situation reached a critical juncture when Nikaidō underwent surgery for his heart condition. Though he did not expect to survive the procedure, his father maintained faith in his recovery. The surgery succeeded, granting Nikaidō what he termed a "new lease on life." Following recovery, he chose to permanently retire from playing baseball during high school. He expressed no regret over having kept the pitching position from Toma Tachibana in junior high.

After retiring, Nikaidō maintained a supportive connection to the Meisei baseball program. He attended games as a spectator, demonstrating ongoing loyalty to the team despite his health struggles and departure from active play. His interactions with the Tachibana brothers, Toma and Soichiro, concluded without lingering animosity. Both sides reached a mutual understanding of each other's circumstances and motivations; neither offered nor demanded an apology for past conflicts.
