Description
Tetsu Shinjou first emerged within a small high school gang. His introduction to Cardfight!! Vanguard came when gang member Ren Suzugamori revealed the game. Initially reluctant, Tetsu eventually accepted Ren's repeated challenges. After losing their initial rooftop match, he demanded rematches until securing victory, sparking his deep appreciation for the game and forming the bedrock of his bond with Ren.
Physically distinctive with purple hair and eyes, Tetsu stood tall with an imposing stature that belied his quiet, reserved nature. He spoke sparingly but consistently showed kindness, particularly towards children, often offering patient deck-building or gameplay advice.
As a founding member of the Foo Fighters and later Team Asteroid, Tetsu earned the moniker "General," serving as Ren Suzugamori's steadfast right hand. His loyalty endured even after he endured the dangerous effects of Ren's PSY Qualia firsthand during an early match where the power was accidentally unleashed against him. This instilled lasting wariness, yet Tetsu chose to remain by Ren's side when Kai Toshiki departed, solidifying his role as second-in-command. His commitment involved operational duties like evaluating team performance and enforcing discipline, exemplified by his expulsion of Kyou Yahagi from AL4 for behavioral issues.
Tetsu specialized in Dark Irregulars decks, utilizing units that rapidly accumulated cards in the soul for powerful effects. His early builds centered on Stil Vampir and Demon World Marquis, Amon, supported by soulcharging units like Dark Soul Conductor. His deck later evolved to incorporate newer strategies such as the Witching Hour series and Dark Lord of Abyss, reflecting his analytical focus on efficient soul management. He also demonstrated skill in deckbuilding fundamentals, advising others on strategy optimization. In combat, his gentle exterior gave way to a relentless and perceptive style, often critiquing opponents' weaknesses mid-match.
Despite his loyalty to Ren and the Foo Fighters, Tetsu privately questioned their path. Following Asaka Narumi's dismissal from Team Asteroid in Season 1, he expressed a desire to see Ren defeated, believing Aichi Sendou capable of this instead of Kai. His internal conflict surfaced during his Season 1 national finals match against Kamui Katsuragi, where Kamui's perspective left him unsettled about his choices.
After graduating high school, Tetsu became the Cardfight Club coach at Fukuhara High. He facilitated training matches with Team Dreadnought and guided his students through the Vanguard Koshien preliminary rounds. During the High School Arc Cont., he confronted Kyou Yahagi and Kouji Ibuki. This period culminated in a pivotal match against a "Reversed" Kai Toshiki, resulting in Tetsu's defeat and subsequent corruption into a Reversed state. As a Reversed fighter, he defeated Team Brilliant Stars before awaiting Ren on the Foo Fighter building's rooftop. Their ensuing cardfight evoked memories of their initial meetings, culminating in Tetsu's victory. This win, symbolically echoing his first triumph over Ren years prior, led him to declare Ren a "Foo Fighter" once more.
Later, during the GIRS Crisis, Tetsu joined Ren professionally at the United Sanctuary branch as his assistant. His relationship with Ren remained complex, blending unwavering loyalty with a grounding influence, rooted in their shared history and Tetsu's role as both childhood friend and pragmatic supporter. Personality assessments categorized him as ISTJ, reflecting traits like dependability, adherence to rules, and meticulousness in responsibilities.
