Description
Mei Narumiya is a third-year student at Inashiro Industrial High School and serves as the baseball team's ace pitcher. A left-handed thrower and batter, he stands 174 centimeters tall and was born on January 5th in Tokyo. Known as the premier left-handed pitcher in the Kanto region, he has earned the nicknames "Prince of the Capital" and later "The King" for his dominant performances, particularly during the Summer Koshien tournaments.

On the surface, Mei presents a personality brimming with confidence and a notable degree of arrogance. He firmly believes that his status as the ace pitcher entitles him to be somewhat selfish and often talks big, openly criticizing teammates when he feels they are underperforming. He dislikes practicing but makes a fair effort when he deems a particular training necessary for his growth. This proud exterior, however, is balanced by a surprisingly bubbly, air-headed, and childish side off the mound, which often manifests in a playful and somewhat lazy demeanor. Beneath this bravado lies a fierce competitor who takes his opponents seriously and accepts responsibility for his mistakes, using past failures as fuel for improvement.

Mei's primary motivation is to win and to meet the immense expectations placed on him as the team's ace. His journey is defined by key relationships, most notably with catcher Kazuya Miyuki of Seidou High School. Having tried to recruit Miyuki to Inashiro during junior high, Mei now holds a complex rivalry with him, addressing him by his first name and maintaining a mutual respect that is layered with competitive tension. His battery-mates have also shaped him significantly: he played alongside the stern former captain Masatoshi Harada and currently mentors his kouhai, the catcher Itsuki Tadano, offering advice despite finding him stubborn. His relationship with Coach Kunitomo Hiroshige is strict, with the coach not hesitating to pull Mei from a game for disobedience, yet providing crucial guidance that helps Mei refine his role as the ace.

Mei's role in the story is that of a primary rival and an imposing standard of excellence that other pitchers and teams strive to surpass. He is the final boss who stands as a formidable wall in the path to Koshien. His character undergoes significant development, particularly following a devastating loss where his own wild pitch led to the team's elimination. This failure haunted him, causing him to withdraw from practice temporarily, but he eventually dedicated himself to rigorous rebuilding of his pitching technique. Over time, his arrogant aura on the mound softens as he learns to shoulder the responsibility of leading his team beyond just his individual performance.

Mei's notable abilities on the field are extensive. His pitching arsenal is highlighted by a fastball clocked at approximately 148 to 156 kilometers per hour, which he complements with a devastating changeup, a sharp slider, and a forkball. He possesses exceptional control and the ability to pace himself, allowing him to pitch complete games regularly. Beyond pitching, he is a capable batter, serving as the team's fifth hole hitter and able to hit for extra bases. His greatest weakness has historically been his own pride, which could disrupt his rhythm when his pitches were hit, but he has shown continuous improvement in managing his composure on the mound.
