Description
Masayoshi Shido is a Japanese politician who appears as a charismatic and confident public figure, but he is in reality the orchestrator of a vast conspiracy to seize control of the country. He is first encountered indirectly when the protagonist, Ren Amamiya, is arrested and put on probation after intervening in an assault that Shido himself was committing. Shido uses his influence to ensure his own name is kept out of the records, setting the protagonist on the path that leads to the formation of the Phantom Thieves. Shido later becomes a popular candidate for prime minister, delivering speeches that promise to eradicate corruption while secretly manipulating events from behind the scenes.

His personality is defined by extreme narcissism and a sense of messianic entitlement. He believes he is destined to rule and that any action he takes is justified by that goal. He is ruthless, greedy, and shows contempt for the people he claims to champion. He has a quick temper and often lashes out verbally when challenged. Despite his public charm, he is deeply manipulative and willing to eliminate anyone who becomes a liability, including his own allies.

Shido’s primary motivation is to become prime minister and reshape Japan according to his own authoritarian vision. To achieve this, he has spent years building a network of corrupt connections, including the police commissioner, the principal of Shujin Academy, the president of Okumura Foods, and influential media figures. He also employs Goro Akechi, a detective skilled in navigating the Metaverse, to carry out mental shutdowns that eliminate opponents and create public fear. These incidents are blamed on the Phantom Thieves, furthering Shido’s agenda.

His role in the story is that of the primary human antagonist. He is the mastermind behind the mental shutdown crisis and the false charges against the protagonist. His actions directly cause the events that bring the Phantom Thieves together and later turn public opinion against them. He becomes their ultimate target after they discover his involvement.

Key relationships include his connection to Goro Akechi, who is revealed to be his illegitimate son. Shido uses Akechi as a tool and has no genuine affection for him, viewing him as a disposable asset. He also has a significant indirect relationship with the protagonist, whose wrongful conviction is the catalyst for the entire narrative. Shido’s alliance with Kunikazu Okumura ends when he orders Akechi to kill Okumura, using the resulting scandal to discredit the Phantom Thieves.

Over the course of the story, Shido is initially confident in his control, dismissing the Phantom Thieves as a minor nuisance. However, as they infiltrate his Palace and uncover his true nature, his composure fractures. The Phantom Thieves eventually steal his treasure, causing him to confess his crimes publicly in a televised breakdown. This change of heart brings down his conspiracy and leads to his arrest.

Notable abilities include his masterful oratory and persuasion, which he uses to sway public opinion and maintain his image. He possesses a genius-level intellect for political strategy and network-building. Through his connection to the Metaverse, he orchestrates acts of psychological manipulation and murder, though he does not directly fight himself. His Palace, which takes the form of a ship representing his delusion of being a savior, reflects his distorted worldview and his belief that he alone can lead Japan to a promised land.
