Description
Ayame Sohma is the older brother of Yuki Sohma by ten years and one of the cursed members of the Sohma family, possessed by the spirit of the Snake from the Chinese zodiac. His curse causes him to transform into a silver snake when hugged by someone of the opposite sex, under significant stress, or exposed to extreme cold or heat due to his cold-blooded nature.

Tall and slender, Ayame possesses long silver hair, striking gold eyes, and a noticeable resemblance to Yuki. He favors flamboyant, custom-designed clothing reflecting his dramatic personal style, often incorporating Chinese-inspired elements. His personality is vivacious, theatrical, and self-centered, marked by a love for wordplay and a tendency to overstay his welcome; he is deeply charismatic yet emotionally draining.

He runs the boutique Ayame, specializing in custom-made "romantic costumes" like maid outfits or frilly dresses, which he describes as fulfilling "men's fantasies." Ayame designs the garments while his assistant and eventual wife, Mine Kuramae, handles the sewing. The shop embodies his desire to create something that "wouldn't exist without him."

During their childhood, Ayame largely ignored Yuki due to Yuki's health-related isolation and their mother's manipulation. A pivotal moment of regret occurred when a young Yuki reached out for help against their abusive mother, but Ayame coldly brushed him aside, creating a lasting rift. As an adult, Ayame becomes obsessively dedicated to repairing their relationship, realizing he would be alone without Yuki. His initial attempts, like gifting Yuki embroidered clothing with phrases such as "I live for my older brother," often backfire due to his overbearing nature. Persistent efforts—including intervening at Yuki's parent-teacher conference to confront their mother's abuse—gradually lead to reconciliation. Yuki eventually acknowledges Ayame's reliability and accepts him as a brother.

Ayame is part of the "Mabudachi Trio" alongside his closest friends, Shigure and Hatori Sohma. He respects Hatori deeply and is one of the few who obeys him unconditionally, often relying on him to curb his excesses. His dynamic with Shigure includes playful, faux-romantic banter. Among the zodiac members, Ayame uniquely avoided direct harm from Akito Sohma, the family head, as Akito found his eccentricity baffling and kept her distance.

When the zodiac curse breaks, Ayame is the fifth to be freed. His first act is to embrace Mine and confess his love, declaring he was "born to love her." In the sequel *Fruits Basket Another*, he marries Mine, and they have two children: a daughter named Hibika and a son named Chizuru. His nephew Mutsuki adores him despite Chizuru finding him obnoxious.

His name derives from the fifth month (*ayamezuki*, "month of irises") in the traditional Japanese calendar, corresponding to the Snake's month. He is around 26–28 years old during the main series and notably susceptible to colds and flu due to his curse.
