Description
Ritsu Sôma belongs to the Sohma family and carries the Monkey spirit of the Chinese zodiac curse. Born prematurely due to this curse, he struggled academically and physically to match his peers from childhood onward. Adults in the Sohma household deemed him worthless, while his parents—particularly his mother Okami Sohma, hostess of the family hot spring inn—habitually apologized for him regardless of fault. This upbringing, combined with genetic anxiety traits, forged Ritsu's profound insecurities, emotional fragility, and extreme self-blame.

Standing 174.3 cm (5'9") with a slender frame, Ritsu has peach-colored hair in the manga and light brown in anime adaptations, with eyes depicted as either brown or grey. His strikingly feminine features frequently cause initial gender confusion, as experienced by Tohru Honda. He consistently wears traditional women's kimonos or furisodes, a practice originating from childhood when wearing Kagura Sohma's dress unexpectedly eased his anxiety. He maintained cross-dressing into adulthood for emotional security, finding male attire unsettling. He typically tied long hair back with a ribbon but later adopted short hair and masculine clothing as his confidence grew.

Ritsu exhibits severe self-esteem issues and an inferiority complex, constantly apologizing for minor or unrelated events. He perceives small errors or sarcasm as devastating failures, provoking tearful breakdowns or suicidal urges. Socially awkward and absent-minded, he missteps in interactions—like gifting fruit-themed books instead of actual fruit due to indecision or unintentionally offending while attempting praise. Despite this, he possesses innate kindness, empathy, and compassion, prioritizing others' needs while believing himself incapable of aiding them.

His pivotal moment occurs upon meeting Tohru Honda near Shigure Sohma's home. After spilling coffee on Shigure's manuscript—causing editor Mitsuru to faint—Ritsu flees to a rooftop planning suicide, consumed by guilt over his perceived uselessness. Tohru intervenes, suggesting that while life may lack inherent purpose, meaning can be found by living for others or being cherished by someone. This conversation reshapes Ritsu's self-worth.

He later bonds with Mitsuru over shared manipulation by Shigure and mutual self-doubt, evolving into romance. Ritsu declares his desire to live for her sake. He attends Sohma gatherings like the New Year's banquet, interacting warmly with cursed relatives including Ayame and Kagura. When his zodiac curse breaks—the sixth among the Sohmas—he drops a vase and weeps in shock, alarming his mother. At Akito Sohma's final banquet, he misinterprets Akito's feminine attire as shared cross-dressing interest, revealing lingering naivety.

In the epilogue, Ritsu appears with short hair and male clothing, signaling newfound assurance. He discusses future plans with Kagura, covering Shigure's career shift and Kyo and Tohru's departure. Teased about marrying Mitsuru, he flusters but no longer permanently retreats to his kimono. He laughs knowingly at Kagura's claim she saw off Kyo "only for his sake," recognizing her genuine care for both Kyo and Tohru—reflecting his matured emotional insight.
