Description
Tenente Toshi Baba, a native of Mars, serves aboard the Mars Orbital Federation Base Nemesis under Colonel Johnny Rico. Assigned to the inexperienced "Lost Patrol" unit, Baba struggles with incompetence and lack of discipline during virtual reality combat training, frequently failing simulations; a critical error involves misfiring a nuclear missile.

During a surprise Arachnid invasion of Mars, Baba evacuates the orbital base with Rico and the unit via dropship. Thrust into combat on the Martian surface, he survives the planetary assault under Rico's command. Amidst the ground engagement, Baba displays ingenuity by establishing radio contact with a Martian National Guard dropship using a primitive antenna – a dropship piloted by his cousin, George Baba.

Baba's combat skills remain inconsistent; he struggles to master powersuit maneuvers, particularly landing after a "bounce." Despite this, he participates in critical missions, including nuclear strikes against Warrior and Plasma Bugs. After Rico is separated during evacuation, Baba discovers the Federation has severed Earth-Mars communications. He later verifies Rico's survival via sensors and rallies the unit to rescue their commander from a bug-overrun terraforming tower.

During the rescue, George Baba's dropship is destroyed by a Plasma Bug attack, forcing another evacuation jump. Baba's suit runs out of fuel during the final evacuation from the tower, requiring physical assistance from Rico and another trooper to board Carmen Ibanez's rescue ship. He survives the subsequent tower explosion that eliminates surrounding Arachnid forces.

In the aftermath, Rico entrusts Baba with classified information exposing Sky Marshal Amy Snapp's conspiracy to destroy Mars. Baba leaks this information publicly via the anti-Federation activist group MarzCo. He remains with the unit under Rico's reinstated command for the campaign to reclaim Mars.

Baba's helmet bears a horse kanji (馬), referencing his surname's meaning. His character evolves from an inept recruit to a more determined soldier, displaying moments of courage and resourcefulness amid ongoing challenges.
