Description
Masuki Satou, performing as MASKING, is the drummer for RAISE A SUILEN. She attends Shirayuki Girls' Academy as a third-year student and works part-time at the live house "Galaxy," owned by her father, specifically assisting at its affiliated "Ramen Ginga" shop. Inspired by her father's background as a drummer, she took up the instrument to emulate his musical path.
A formative incident occurred during middle school when Masuki performed as a support drummer for a cultural festival band. Dissatisfied with their amateurish performance, she lashed out in frustration. This led to a prolonged period where her unrestrained, improvisation-heavy drumming earned her the "Mad Dog" reputation, making it difficult to find a permanent band and labeling her a "stray drummer" who mainly performed support roles. Struggles culminated in her second year of high school upon discovering an old photograph of her father enjoying his band, confronting her feelings of isolation and frustration about her musical journey.
Masuki was later scouted by Tamade Chiyu (CHU²) for the forming RAISE A SUILEN. Chiyu recognized the raw potential in her drumming and offered a place where she could play without restraint, unleashing her "Mad Dog" style within the band. Her stage name "MASKING" combines "Masuki" with the nickname "King," bestowed by fellow drummer Yamato Maya, who deeply admires her.
Despite a sharp, intimidating appearance featuring dyed blonde hair, a piercing gaze, and sukeban fashion, Masuki possesses contrasting personal traits. She enjoys baking cakes, adores cute things, reads shoujo manga like *Miracle Drum☆Snappy-chan*, and watches anime movies. Her personality is enthusiastic and straightforward, though she occasionally speaks without full consideration, leading to unintended bluntness. She values her bandmates deeply, demonstrating loyalty by encouraging Rokka to audition for RAISE A SUILEN and later motivating her after an initial failure.
Within RAISE A SUILEN, Masuki acts as a stabilizing and morale-boosting presence. While Chiyu focuses on technical precision and broader ambitions, Masuki emphasizes band unity and emotional expression. This contrast surfaces during internal conflicts, particularly when Masuki openly challenges Chiyu’s competitive "war" mindset against other bands, arguing it undermines RAS's cohesion. Her powerful drumming, occasionally overwhelming for past bands, provides a driving foundation for RAS's sound, pushing members like Rokka to perform at their best.
Masuki maintains a long-standing professional relationship with Rei Wakana, having worked together as support musicians before joining RAS. Her school life contrasts with her stage persona; she behaves more refinedly at her Catholic academy, where she is noted as popular among peers. Additional personal details include her dislike of waking up early, her ability to fall asleep anywhere, and her ownership of a scooter license used for leisurely rides.
