TV-Series
Description
Maya Toomi is a central character initially introduced as a childhood friend of Kazuki Makabe and Soushi Minashiro on Tatsumiya Island. She lives with her mother, Chizuru, the island's doctor, and her older sister, Yumiko, a teacher for the handicapped. Despite her family's medical background, Maya struggles with even basic medical tasks like applying bandages.

Her early life involves school activities and close friendships, particularly with the physically frail Shouko Hazama, whom she assists during emergencies. During the first Festum attack, Maya helps evacuate Shouko, witnessing civilians assimilated firsthand, an experience that leaves deep scars. She later becomes a first-generation Fafner pilot, though an initial physical handicap temporarily assigns her as an operator in the CDC before she transitions to active pilot duty.

Maya pilots the Fafner Mark Sieben, later upgraded to Mark Sieben Kai and nicknamed Azrael. She is recognized for exceptional sniping skills and maintains a calm, analytical combat demeanor, contrasting her typically lively and frank personality. Her combat style blends compassion with steely resolve, thinking clearly under pressure and demonstrating a willingness to defy authority. Her loyalty centers on protecting Tatsumiya Island as her home, evolving from simple defense to accepting the grim necessity of killing human attackers during Neo UN assaults.

In *Exodus*, Maya undergoes advanced flight training under Kyousuke Mizoguchi, whom she jokingly calls "dad." She demonstrates tactical growth during encounters with Festum clones and the Human Army, including a pivotal moment distracting Festum to save her mentor. Her interactions reveal a more relaxed side, including lighthearted teasing of colleagues like Soushi and Kenji Kondou about their professionalism.

Her role expands significantly in *The Beyond*. She participates in the Fifth Operation Azure to rescue Soushi Minashiro and two abducted Esperanto children. Her Fafner launches from the L Boat, coordinating with Sui Kaburagi's Amaterasu to eliminate airborne enemies. A critical trauma occurs when a Festum mimicking her sister assimilates her right eye, causing severe pain and incapacitation. She later recovers after Kenji Kondou cancels the Festum's cross-dimensional link.

Three years after Operation Azure, Maya remains an active pilot. She exhibits deep caution encountering Kazuki and Soushi on Misao Kurusu's boat, warning others to stay vigilant given Soushi's three-year captivity. She physically blocks Soushi when he attacks Miwa Hino, reflecting persistent wariness. She explicitly states her resolve to prevent Soushi from rejoining the enemy, even at the cost of his hatred. Later, she reacts swiftly upon learning Soushi intends to destroy the island with Mark Nicht, immediately mobilizing to counter this threat.

Her interpersonal relationships include a hinted romantic interest in Kazuki, largely unexplored in later installments. Her friendships, particularly her protective bond with Shouko and evolving dynamic with Soushi, underscore her role as an emotionally observant character who perceives others' unspoken feelings.
