Description
Masakiyo Dōbashi is a second-year student at Hakone Academy and a member of the Hakone Academy Bicycle Club. He serves as the fifth member of the team that participates in the second Inter High competition featured in the story. Originally introduced during the New Generation arc, he continues to appear as a supporting character in Glory Line and later in Limit Break.
Dōbashi is known for his loud and confident demeanor, often projecting a bold and self-assured presence. However, before races he seeks out quiet places to concentrate and dislikes being interrupted during these moments of focus. He also has a strong aversion to being spoken over or interrupted when he is talking, particularly when discussing what he perceives as opposing goals. In his earlier years, he was repeatedly criticized for being unable to control his strong emotions, which led him to consciously suppress both his happiness and anger in many situations, including during races. This emotional restraint was a deliberate choice to improve his performance after negative feedback.
As a cyclist, Dōbashi specializes in sprinting. Over time, he refines his technique and develops a two-phase acceleration that he activates by channeling his intense feelings into his riding style. This ability allows him to increase his speed in a distinctive, powerful surge. His reputation as a formidable rider is reflected in his nickname Kaidō Dōbashi, a pun connecting the Japanese words for road and monster.
Within the Hakone team, Dōbashi works alongside other riders such as Sangaku Manami, Yukinari Kuroda, and Yūto Shinkai. His role as a sprinter makes him a key component of the team's strategy in the flat stages of the race, where his explosive speed can be used to challenge opponents from other schools, notably the sprinters from Sōhoku High School. Throughout his appearances, Dōbashi undergoes personal growth in learning to balance his natural intensity with the discipline required for high-level competition. His development culminates in the refinement of his sprinting technique and a better understanding of how to harness his emotions productively rather than repressing them entirely.
