Jean Armstrong owns and operates the French-themed restaurant Trés Bien. He presents an effeminate demeanor and adopts a drag persona named Claurice Armstrong, identifying as male while performing as a "French maiden." His restaurant features predominantly pink decor, his favorite color, and he peppers his speech with French phrases as part of his drag performance, despite not being French. Facing financial ruin due to overpriced, poor-quality food, Armstrong borrowed $500,000 from loan shark Furio Tigre. Unable to repay, he fell under Tigre's control and was coerced into assisting with the murder of Glen Elg, framing waitress Maggey Byrde. Armstrong helped stage the murder scene for witness Victor Kudo and disposed of Elg's body. He also attempted to steal Elg's winning lottery ticket but mistakenly took a worthless one. During the subsequent murder investigation, Armstrong interacted with defense attorney Phoenix Wright. He initially refused cooperation and stole Wright's spiritual magatama artifact. Later, misunderstanding Wright's intent with a job listings magazine, Armstrong impulsively hired Wright's assistant, Maya Fey, as a waitress. This allowed Wright to recover his magatama and uncover Armstrong's kleptomania. When Tigre confronted Armstrong at the restaurant, Armstrong's fear escalated, leading him to physically attack Wright until detective Dick Gumshoe intervened. In court, Armstrong's testimony contained inconsistencies, such as claiming the victim listened to a radio via an earpiece despite the victim's ruptured eardrum. Under cross-examination, his account of witnessing the murder via a mirror reflection was debunked, revealing the crime was staged. Armstrong eventually confessed his involvement resulted from Tigre's coercion. Flamboyant and flirtatious, Armstrong writes poetry in a kitchen notebook and practices aromatherapy with ineffective oils. His kleptomania has led to prior arrests. He often jumps to conclusions, exemplified by his abrupt hiring of Maya Fey, and inconsistently refers to himself as female, such as calling himself a "weak woman" during testimony. Localization reflects cultural adaptations: his Japanese name "Kaoru Hondobō" incorporates French culinary terms, while "Jean Armstrong" plays on "strong-arm" tactics related to his debt. The French version changes his persona to Italian, renaming him "Luigi Labocca." Adapting the original Japanese term "okama" required careful localization to convey his identity as a cisgender gay man in drag for Western audiences. Physically, Armstrong possesses a robust build, a rounded face, brown eyes, and blonde hair reaching his ears. He wears a pink chef's uniform with brown shoes.
