Keisuke Itonokogiri, known professionally as Dick Gumshoe, is a sergeant in the homicide division. He frequently manages investigations involving defense attorneys such as Phoenix Wright and prosecutors like Miles Edgeworth. Aspiring to law enforcement since childhood, he built a functional bug detector that later aided a police case. Before joining the force, he worked part-time as a mover.
Promoted to homicide detective in 2012, his start was rocky. He mistakenly reported to his old post on day one, leading to a salary cut by Prosecutor Byrne Faraday. A week later, while guarding a defendant lobby during detective Tyrell Badd's interview nearby, he shared Swiss rolls from a vending machine with Faraday's daughter, Kay. After Faraday and the defendant were found dead, he faced wrongful murder accusations. Rookie prosecutor Miles Edgeworth cleared his name, forging Gumshoe's unwavering, sometimes exasperating, loyalty to him.
He investigates high-profile murders, often persuading his way onto complex cases. He typically handles initial crime scene processing and serves as the first trial witness, presenting evidence and testimony. Despite repeated pay cuts and dismissal threats—fueled partly by financial hardship that forces him to live on instant noodles—he remains optimistic and dedicated. His investigations include collaborating with Phoenix Wright, notably arresting Maya Fey in Mia Fey's murder case before Wright secured her acquittal. He later helped Wright expose corruption at Global Studios and provided key support during Edgeworth's murder accusation, lending a metal detector that aided the defense.
His loyalty transcends duty; he risked his job to help Wright access restricted files during the SL-9 incident, resulting in temporary dismissal. Reinstated after the police chief was exposed as a murderer, he also worked under prosecutors like Franziska von Karma, enduring her whip while sharing case insights with Wright. Personally, he harbors a crush on officer Maggey Byrde and shares a mentorship bond with detective Jake Marshall, who gifted him a cactus as a confidant.
In later years, he participated in Vera Misham's Jurist System test trial and partnered with Kay Faraday in the "Investigations" series, continuing as Edgeworth's investigative ally. He exhibits childlike enthusiasm alongside professional reliability, easily bonding with children like Pearl Fey. He is recognized by his green jacket, orange tie, a recurring bandage on his left cheek, and stands 182 cm tall.
