Description
Ōtake commanded the Spirit World's Special Defense Force (SDF) as captain until his demotion after the Chapter Black Saga. This tall, middle-aged man possesses brown hair marked by a distinctive bang hanging over his left forehead. As SDF captain, Ōtake projected a commanding presence and stern loyalty, prioritizing mission efficiency even above Koenma's authority. His leadership steadied his team during Yusuke Urameshi's startling revival as an S-class demon.
Ordered by Great King Enma during the Chapter Black Saga, Ōtake led the SDF to seal the Demon World barrier and halt Yusuke's transformation into a Mazoku. The mission collapsed when Yusuke incapacitated Ōtake with one kick and coerced the team into freeing Koenma. After Yusuke and Koenma departed for the Demon World, Ōtake rallied his demoralized subordinates—who had believed themselves Spirit World's strongest—by acknowledging more powerful beings existed in the Demon World. He then ordered Itsuki's dimensional tunnel sealed within 48 hours, a deadline his team met.
Ōtake later confronted Koenma and Yusuke's group outside the sealed cave, warning Koenma that Enma would be informed of his interference. He appeared next in Enma's palace, where Enma voiced pride in his son's defiance, suggesting Ōtake witnessed the exchange. Enma subsequently removed Ōtake as SDF captain, replacing him with his subordinate Shunjun.
In the final saga (Sei-Sei Shinto), Ōtake reemerged with a renegade faction that seized the Gate of Judgment, taking Koenma and Botan hostage. They demanded the removal of demons from the Human World, restoration of the barrier, and attempted to activate a dimensional weapon against humanity. Yusuke and his allies thwarted the plot, subduing the faction and preventing the weapon's firing. The manga portrayed Ōtake as the traitor leading this insurrection, while the anime presented him defending Koenma's past decisions regarding Yusuke despite his opposition.
As former SDF captain, Ōtake wielded standard team abilities: dimensional portal manipulation (Dimensional Hole), flight, teleportation, and energy blasts. These skills facilitated rapid response and coordinated dimensional sealing operations.
