Description
Makoto Midorikawa, a special investigator for the Metropolitan Police Force, possesses psychometry. This ability allows him to access memories embedded within objects through physical contact. Manifesting in childhood, the uncontrollable visions led others to perceive him as unusual. He constantly wears a glove on his right hand to manage this power.
His investigation into the Hulong research laboratory explosion brings him to Sarah Coppola, the incident's haunted sole survivor. Touching her ring triggers a traumatic vision of the event: victims engulfed by a red light, vanishing without remains. This experience pulls him into a conspiracy surrounding Exotic Matter (XM), a substance capable of influencing human cognition.
Initially distrustful and isolated due to his abilities, Makoto's perspective shifts upon encountering the amnesiac Sarah. Choosing to protect her, they form a partnership based on mutual reliance. Fleeing adversaries like the mercenary Jack Norman, he installs the Ingress app on his phone. This reveals a global conflict between the Enlightened and Resistance factions vying for control of XM. He aligns with the Enlightened, believing XM represents evolutionary potential.
Exposure to XM amplifies his psychometric abilities dramatically. Once limited to fragmented object memories, he gains the capacity to perceive interconnected memories across time and space. Within an Enlightened Control Field (Δ), he accesses detailed pre-explosion memories from Sarah's past. He also develops sensitivity to XM fields, detecting nearby portals and faction alignments, though unable to see XM directly like Sarah.
Deep trust defines his evolving relationship with Sarah. He uses his ability to help her recover fragmented memories related to Hulong's experiments, including locating a hidden Kyoto facility. Their partnership faces external threats from Liu Tien Hua, head of Hulong security, and Christopher Brandt, a scientist orchestrating XM-based mind control plans. Zion Kunikida, a hacker friend, provides logistical support.
During the conflict's climax, Makoto coordinates global faction cooperation to create a unified XM network. This effort supports Sarah's confrontation against Brandt, who seeks to assimilate human consciousness using corrupted "Dark XM." Following these events, Makoto adopts a nomadic existence, traveling alongside Hank Johnson. His primary motivation becomes locating Sarah and Jack, both missing after the final battle, holding onto hope for their eventual reunion.
