Description
Musashi's Sonans originally belonged to a trainer named Benny before accidentally trading hands during a Pokémon Swap Meet in Johto. Musashi's Pokéball containing Lickitung fell into the trade machine, transferring Sonans to her without her knowledge or intent. It subsequently became a permanent member of Musashi's team and the Team Rocket trio.

Debuted in battle against Satoshi's Chikorita, it showcased signature countering techniques despite lacking offensive moves. Sonans frequently emerged unprompted from its Pokéball early on, often during the Team Rocket motto or after their defeats, cementing its role as a de facto fourth member. Key early episodes highlighted its reliance on Counter and Mirror Coat, redirecting Nyarth's attacks or defeating opponents solo at a Wobbuffet festival. It displayed unexpected loyalty, shielding Satoshi's Totodile from a Golem's attack during a separation incident.

Throughout the Advanced Generation series, it participated in schemes and contests, though its performances frequently caused Musashi's elimination due to strategic misfires. In one notable episode, it fled after a scare, developed affection for a Kirlia, and sabotaged a Team Rocket mission to protect it. Accompanying the trio to Sinnoh in the Diamond & Pearl series, it was used in Pokémon Contests and fashion shows, often with comically disastrous results like sending Musashi sky-high during a Wallace Cup performance.

Due to regional restrictions in the Best Wishes series, it remained at Team Rocket headquarters, appearing only in non-canon shorts and a brief reunion episode before rejoining for Kalos. In the XY series, its battle competence improved, nearly defeating Pikachu by reflecting its Thunderbolt. Separated from Musashi, it developed a romantic involvement with another Wobbuffet owned by Dr. White. Despite the opportunity to stay, it chose to return to Team Rocket, later aiding in countering a Pokémon hunter's Rhyperior.

In Pokémon Journeys: The Series, it consistently appears with Team Rocket during schemes like a Kuchiba City trade event. Its role remains supportive, utilizing Counter and Mirror Coat during missions, with no new significant developments beyond its established behavioral patterns.

Biologically identified as male, Sonans exhibits a protective instinct for its pitch-black tail, becoming uncharacteristically aggressive if the tail is threatened – a trait noted in Pokédex entries as a potential trigger for Destiny Bond. Typically docile, it avoids initiating combat but endures and retaliates against attacks with counter moves. Its personality blends comic relief through untimely appearances with occasional depth, such as displays of loyalty or romantic interest.
