Description
Mitsuru Hanagata, heir to Hanagata Motors, spent his early childhood in England. There, he endured bullying and discrimination as a "yellow Jap," fueling a fierce competitive drive. He mastered soccer, horseback riding, fencing, and tennis, even meeting Queen Elizabeth II. Returning to Japan brought disillusionment with his homeland and family. He turned delinquent, driving sports cars illegally and forming the Black Shadows baseball team. Witnessing Hyūma Hoshi's pitching prowess and secret training gear marked their first encounter. Hanagata's signature "Knockout Batting" technique was shattered by Hyūma, establishing him as Hanagata's eternal rival.
Entering Kōyō High School in Kanagawa, Hanagata transformed its obscure baseball team into a Kōshien contender. Learning of Hyūma's financial struggles to continue education, he offered tuition money through Hyūma's sister Akiko. Hyūma initially rejected the aid, leading to a physical fight between the rivals that forged mutual respect. Hanagata forced a matchup by arranging a game between Kōyō and Hyūma's Seiun High, broadcasting it to ensure Hyūma's participation. The game ended dramatically with Hyūma tying the score via a home run, but Hanagata controversially tagged him out at home plate.
During the Kōshien finals, unaware of Hyūma's thumb injury from the semi-finals, Hanagata criticized Hyūma's pitching as cowardly. He ultimately hit a game-winning home run off a blood-stained pitch from the injured Hyūma. Discovering the truth about the injury, Hanagata embraced Hyūma emotionally on the mound. This act inadvertently contributed to the disbanding of Seiun High's baseball team and Hyūma's expulsion. Hanagata later sent the blood-stained ball to the Yomiuri Giants office to highlight Hyūma's determination, an act that backfired by increasing management's displeasure with Hyūma.
When Hyūma joined the Giants, Hanagata joined the Hanshin Tigers, taking permanent number "10." As a pro, he initially hit well against Hyūma but fell into a slump after being struck out by Hyūma's "Dai League Ball No. 1." To overcome this, Hanagata underwent extreme special training at a Hanagata Motors subcontractor factory, hitting an iron ball with an iron bat. This training enabled him to hit a home run off the Dai League Ball, though it caused serious injuries including broken bones. Their intense rivalry continued in the professional arena.

It covered his childhood in England, delinquent years, formation of the Black Shadows, encounters with Hyūma, their high school and Kōshien confrontations, and professional rivalry. New content explored his relationship with his lover Akiko Hoshi and his personal struggles. The series highlighted his transition to the Tigers, featuring episodes like "Fateful Encounter," "Road to Kōshien," "The Last Showdown," and "Eternal Rivals." Hanagata appeared in sequel series like *Shin Kyojin no Hoshi*, investigating a mysterious substitute hitter later revealed to be Hyūma, leading to their dramatic reunion. His character is defined by an unwavering sense of justice, chivalry, and loyalty to friends, often using the dismissive insult: "I don't have a name to give to you."
