Description
Melori is a female Cocotama, a tiny apprentice god born from the cherished keys of a piano that was played with great care during a human's childhood. Her full formal designation is Melo Melo-Rin Hime-no-Mikoto. She is considered the main female character within the Cocotama franchise, while a Cocotama named Luckytama serves as the primary protagonist overall. Her egg, which appears in the associated toy line, is pink in color.
Visually, Melori is a small creature whose design resembles a hybrid of a poodle and a rabbit. Her fur is a light pink shade, complemented by creamy white markings on her paws and face. She possesses long, floppy ears that end in tufts of fur, which she can move and even use to carry objects above her head. A distinctive curl of fur rests on her forehead, and her tail is shaped like a single musical note, appropriately reflecting her origin as a piano spirit. She wears a dark pink bow on her head and is often depicted carrying a tiny pink microphone for singing. Her underwear, which is part of the eggshell she hatched from and is standard for apprentice Cocotamas, is eggshell-colored and features a dark pink heart symbol.
Melori has a personality that is primarily bright, cheerful, and pure. She is enthusiastic about making friends and forming bonds with humans. However, she is also highly emotional and possesses a very soft heart, which makes her prone to becoming easily upset or acting naive in difficult situations. Her most defining trait is her deep love for music. She sings constantly to express her feelings and has a heavenly voice that can enhance or amplify the emotions of those who hear it. She has a great deal of knowledge about music, playing the piano proficiently, and is patient enough to give singing lessons to others when needed. A notable verbal quirk is her habit of ending her sentences with the word nano, a form of feminine slang used to make an assertion or ask a question.
Melori makes her first appearance in the second episode of the anime. Her egg is discovered by a young boy named Makoto Yotsuba near the family piano, after which his sister, Kokoro Yotsuba, takes the egg to her room to hatch it. Upon hatching, Melori immediately expresses a strong desire to form a secret contract with Kokoro, believing she has been waiting a long time for that specific human partner. A central conflict arises because a single human can only have a contract with one Cocotama, and Kokoro has already formed a contract with Luckytama. The shock of this revelation causes Melori to burst into inconsolable tears. The situation is ultimately resolved when Kokoro proposes a unique solution: Melori can sign a rental contract to live in the Cocotama House that Kokoro built, effectively making Kokoro her landlord rather than her contracted partner. This allows Melori to reside in the home and be part of the group.
Her role in the story is as a resident Cocotama in the Yotsuba household, where she lives alongside other Cocotama including Luckytama, Oshaki (born from a book), and Kiraris (born from lipstick). Throughout the series, she participates in various group activities, challenges, and adventures with these companions. Her relationships are generally friendly, though she sometimes has disagreements, particularly with Luckytama, who initially argued with her over the contract issue. Despite being born later than some of the others, she is occasionally tasked with chores by the more principle-driven Oshaki. Melori shows kindness to newcomers, as seen when she admires Kiraris upon her birth rather than feeling jealous or upset.
Over the course of the series, Melori demonstrates development in her abilities and her application of them. While she is often cheerful and slightly messy, she can show a more serious and thoughtful side when the situation calls for it. For instance, when a character named Kate fails an audition, Melori remembers that Kate sings well in front of her school friends and suggests creating a stage for her at school, offering encouragement. She also seeks to improve her own skills, at one point receiving special singing training from another Cocotama named Oshaki.
As a piano god Cocotama, Melori has several notable abilities, primarily centered around her magical singing voice. She can perform magic by reciting a specific chant, often involving a hula dance motion as is customary for female Cocotama. Her signature magic involves singing a song that causes people to dance, feel happy, or become more charming and attractive. The effects of her songs are such that humans who hear them believe the music is either being sung by the person they are with or is simply coming from the sky, as Melori performs her magic in secret. On occasion, she can combine her magical abilities with those of other Cocotamas to achieve greater effects, such as creating a vehicle to find their way back home.
