Description
Mikoto Suoh, known as the Red King or Third King, was born on August 13, 1988. Orphaned young, his grandfather raised him. During childhood, he witnessed the Kagutsu Crater Incident while playing soccer, an event later influencing his connection to supernatural forces.
His volatile temperament emerged early; he was feared for violent tendencies as early as middle school. In high school, he formed a close friendship with Izumo Kusanagi, frequently visiting the bar HOMRA. There, he first encountered Tatara Totsuka, who became pivotal in his life. At age 18, Mikoto became the Red King during a confrontation with the dangerous Strain "Earless Mitsuha," leading to the formation of the Red Clan, HOMRA, with Kusanagi and Totsuka as its first members.
Mikoto exhibited stoicism and minimal verbal expression. He often appeared indifferent to his role as King, questioning its purpose and displaying a lazy demeanor, frequently napping deeply and instantaneously. Despite this, he possessed a notoriously violent temper, especially in youth. His habits included heavy smoking (preferring Marlboro cigarettes) and drinking bourbon, specifically Wild Turkey. A dark sense of humor surfaced when he named a horse "Basashi" (a reference to raw horse meat) upon feeling hungry seeing the animal.
Foundational relationships existed with HOMRA members. He shared genuine bonds with each clansman, fostering mutual respect and concern. Totsuka's death profoundly impacted him, leading to increased introspection and emotional distance, though his care for the clan remained unwavering. He honored Totsuka by wearing the latter's blood-filled ear piercing and using his power to burn Totsuka's coffin. Protectiveness extended to Anna Kushina, a young Strain he took under his wing, taking her on outings despite personal reluctance.
As the Red King, Mikoto wielded fire-based abilities through his Red Aura, capable of incinerating targets or transferring power via physical contact—a process termed "Installation." His aura manifested shields, projectiles, or destructive waves like the "Flame Slash" that split structures such as clock towers. The floating Sword of Damocles, symbolizing his kingship, reflected his aura's stability; its deterioration signaled impending demise. Overusing his power accelerated this decline, risking a "Damocles Down"—a cataclysmic event capable of massive destruction.
Key events across his reign included confronting Rakshasa drug dealers to rescue a clansman's friend, integrating new members like Eric Sōlt (whom he instinctively recognized as a threat), and clashing with rival factions. His leadership style emphasized autonomy; he allowed clansmen to follow voluntarily and rarely initiated recruitment. The film *K: Seven Stories* explores his early reign, depicting conflicts with the newly formed Scepter 4 and its Blue King, Reisi Munakata. Their ideological clashes culminated in physical battles where Mikoto's raw power overshadowed buildings and cratered landscapes.
Following Totsuka's murder, Mikoto intentionally allowed Scepter 4 to imprison him, hoping to prevent his deteriorating power from harming others. After escaping, he pursued the Colorless King for vengeance. Ultimately, he provoked Munakata into killing him to avert a Damocles Down, sacrificing himself to protect the city. He died 12 days after Totsuka, aged 24.
