Tasked by Elliot Stratmann to retrieve his daughter Carly, Wald uncovers her entanglement in coderoin trafficking through her lover Wayne Eisner. Abandoning Elliot, Wald and associate Lou Meade conspire with Wayne to ransom Carly, holding her hostage in their Van Gelder Street office.

Their scheme unravels when they clash with undercover Military Police officer Annie Leonhart. Wald arranges her ambush, bribing a carriage driver to capture her and seize her ring.
